5.0 out of 5 stars Real life in France, 30 Jan 2003
By A Customer
Having come to live in France in my early youth, quite a while ago, I have fits of the giggles every time I read this book. It's so funny to see this country with the eyes of an expat again, and Christopher Campbell-Howes describes it with such a fine sense of humour and with such enthusiasm. I can highly recommend it to everyone with a love of France, and especially to expats past, present and futur. It's a good introduction to the French way of life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Life in the Languedoc, 26 Oct 2002
By A Customer
This collection of anecdotes and observations about life in the rural south-west of France is taken from a long-running series of articles in the Scottish newspaper The Northern Scot. The author, Christopher Campbell-Howes, left Scotland more than ten years ago to make a new life in France, and this book tells of many of the ordinary and extraordinary events and people that he has come across during this time.

We meet the farmer whose purchase of a mail-order Russian bride went sadly awry, the village huntsmen on the trail of a wild boar in the vegetable plot, Maitre Zany the Famous Medium, Seer and Healer, and a whole array of villagers, urban weekenders, patissiers, fonctionnaires, garagistes, postmen, musicians and the like who contribute to the rich tapestry of daily life in the Languedoc.

Beautifully written in a literary style that never detracts from the warm engagement which the author feels for the colourful and vibrant world around him, Christopher Campbell-Howes's "letters" from the Languedoc are a wonderful introduction to the region for those whose wanderings have not yet taken them to this less well known corner of France, and will inspire many delightful moments of recognition in those who know the area and its customs well. Highly recommended for all Francophiles.

5.0 out of 5 stars What it's really like to live in the South of France, 4 Mar 2002
In a this book of short autobiographical vignettes, Christopher Campbell-Howes provides a series of (by turns) funny, touching, bizarre and decidely down-to-earth glimpses of what life is like in the rural southwest of France once the ex-pat's rose-tinted glasses come off.

A long-term resident of the Languedoc region, Chris' fluency in French and passion for music have ensured his total integration with the surprisingly multicultural community in and around his home village of Olargues. This book is a must-read for anyone with an interest in French life, lore and mores, from armchair Francophiles to those planning their own French adventure.
