5.0 out of 5 stars Great for refresher course, 15 Sep 2005
By A Customer
I bought this having studied French to Olevel years ago (and I wasn't very good even in those days!). However I've been really surprised how much I've been able to (re)learn having studied this book for two weeks only on my comute for an hour or so a day You may need to have some knowledge of the language and not be a complete beginner, it's difficult for me to say as I have also studied other Latin languages to a degree level. However if you are familiar with learning languages and/or have learnt some French in the past, I'm sure this book will be of real use to you. The vocab is modern and relevant including such words as CD, computer etc and the grammar is to the point and organised in a very logical manner (for example all the different ways of saying "what" put together and explained). It was a very worthwhile purchase for me at such a good price. You will have a very good basic knowledge of French if you work your way through this book. There are CDs to go with the book but I've not bought them and so can't comment on them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The One to Get, 10 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Having just started a Spanish degree, I thought I'd try my hand at French, which I did badly at in my GCSEs 5 years ago. By using this book I was able to use constructions way ahead of the level expected. This is because the book gives you the information you need to learn how to speak French, whereas most textbooks give you a few phrases in an illogical manner.
Do not be surprised if this book challenges you- some chapters seem very difficult and will make you sweat, but stick with it and you'll soon be rewarded by speaking kick-ass French. I'm on week 8 now and my reward for finishing week 12 will be the advanced CD edition so I can pronounce the stuff better.
This book is the best way to learn French solidly, and, at five pounds, an absolute bargain. Oh yes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Puts schools to shame!, 29 Oct 2005
By Laura Plumb (Flumet, France) - See all my reviews
Having studied French for 3 years at school and Spanish to A-Level recently, I can truthfully say that I have learnt more in just a few hours of using this book than I ever learned in several years of language lessons at school. I've also studied a little German, Italian, Dutch and Greek in my spare time using a wide range of different methods, so I have good basis for comparison. No other self-study kit that I've tried matches up to the "Hugo in 3 months" series. This range of language study kits explains everything in a clear, concise manner, giving easy-to-read lists of verb conjugations, grammar rules and vocabulary. After each short section on a particular grammar point, there's an exercise for you to complete, which is what really helps you to remember what you've just learnt. The great thing about this course is that it really places an emphasis on the grammar, enabling you to construct sentences for yourself, rather than relying on the ready-made phrases that schoolteachers and phrasebooks give you. None of this "verbal participation" nonsense either - you'd be amazed at just how much you can learn without actually having to say a word to anyone! Being familiar with the GCSE and A-Level language syllabi, I would say that completing this self-study course (and understanding everything covered) would bring the student up to the equivalent of GCSE standard. If you're looking for something more advanced, then there's always the "Hugo Advanced French" course, which follows on from this one. So if you enjoy learning things logically, this is the course for you! Highly recommended.
