Some amigos of mine regard
Vicky Cristina Barcelona [DVD] [2008] as nothing more than a bunch of cliches: neurotic New Yorkers, hot-headed Latins, you know the score. Well, this is the same but with Brits and Frogs.
Hugh Bonneville is faced with two crises: the start of couples therapy following his failed marriage proposal, and the prospect of interviewing a pretentious french director (Eric Cantona) about his films and their preoccupation with love. French Film manages to have it both ways, inviting us to laugh at the loquacious claptrap of a pontificating Frenchman and at the same time, admit that there's much still to learn for the defensive, sarcastic Brits who'd rather just keep a lid on things.
Very amusing, even laugh out loud funny, and quite charming, French Film might be a slight film but it won't disappoint. Time well spent.
