Jed (Bonneville) and Cheryl have been together for ten years when Jed decides to propose... only for it to trigger doubts on the meaning of love and make his life more complicated than ever. French Film director Thierry Grimandi (Cantona), and best friends and seemingly perfect couple, Sophie (Duff) and Marcus (Henshall) get caught up in Jed's new uncertain world and offer their own ways out. Some amigos of mine regard Vicky Cristina Barcelona [DVD] [2008] as nothing more than a bunch of cliches: neurotic New Yorkers, hot-headed Latins, you know the score. Well, this is the same but with Brits and Frogs.
Hugh Bonneville is faced with two crises: the start of couples therapy following his failed marriage proposal, and the prospect of interviewing a pretentious french director (Eric Cantona) about his films and their preoccupation with love. French Film manages to have it both ways, inviting us to laugh at the loquacious claptrap of a pontificating Frenchman and at the same time, admit that there's much still to learn for the defensive, sarcastic Brits who'd rather just keep a lid on things.
Very amusing, even laugh out loud funny, and quite charming, French Film might be a slight film but it won't disappoint. Time well spent.

For people who loved Love Actually, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, this perfect rom com viewing with the ever charming Hugh Bonneville being stumped by love. Cameo by Eric Cantona being superior and French. Written by Ashlin Ditta who here being wry and reflective as well as funny.
