4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to brush up your French. 3 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
This course book is aimed at beginning learners of French, and though I think a complete newcomer to the language would struggle with it, I've given it 4 stars because it is a useful tool to improve upon existing skills, however rusty. If you studied French at school or perhaps have taken a basic class as an adult, and want to improve on what you already know, this book will probably be just what you're looking for. It provides a great review of the grammar points you may have forgotten (or never really learned the first time around!), some very useful vocabulary, and a review of pronunciation. There are quizzes and written practice sections throughout to test your progress, and these have been very useful to me, especially to check spelling and verb conjugations. The only thing which lets the book down a little is the audio - it consists mostly of two actors reading out some of the oral practice sections from the book. It seems a waste to have all of that audio just to check your pronunciation, and not to have any comprehension sections at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 28 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Useful for ab initio learner as well as for revision. Some examples are a bit weird, but good for a laugh, while your aunt's postillion avoids the lightning. Comprehensive without being overwhelming, which often the case with a new language. Also have the Spanish version and if anything it is even better.

I was looking forward to receiving this however when I ordered it from thrift books I expected to receive the accompanying CD however there is no CD as it is missing from the book, very unfortunate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for Beginners 31 Aug 2012
By Adz
Format:Paperback
This book is excellent. I had no clue about French, other than the scraps I'd taken from primary school, and with this book I am now able to speak conversational French within a group of people. Covers many important aspects, as with most book, like tenses, verbs, articles, etc, etc. However, my most favoured feature of this book is the phonetic pronunciation with EVERY SINGLE word in the book. I could not possible recommend this book any more to anyone that wishes to begin or brush up on their French. Like I said, I couldn't speak French before I bought this book and now I can hold conversations quite easily. Indeed, practice with native speakers is also required for better learning but it wouldn't have been possible without this book!

Very easy to use and understand with the help of the cd, if used in conjunction with actual French lessons.
