5.0 out of 5 stars Bonjour Paris, c'est Les Miserables! 22 Feb 2003
Format:Audio CD
I was apprehensive about buying this; I love Les Mis (I have three other versions) and didn't think the French would have the same emotional impact... but it's stunning! it's very different from the English version, lots of songs are missing and some that are there are switched round (i.e. Fantine sings "On My Own"), but that's part of what makes it such a great experience: It's not just a direct translation of Les Mis, it's almost a whole different show, but with the same brilliant music.
The cast are highly talented, Enjolras, Eponine and a splendid Gavroche being worthy of special mention, and overall the music is fantastic, sounding 'funkier' than the English update in places. Les Miserable the way Hugo would have approved. Worth getting for all Les Mis fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought it would be! 6 Jun 2008
Format:Audio CD
I, like the others who reviewed before me, was apprehensive about purchasing this album, since my knowledge of French is poor to say the least, and the lyrics are fantastic in my opinion. However I purchased it based on the large number of five-star reviews it received.

And, like the other reviewers, I was very pleasantly surprised! I don't understand the full French language but my basic understanding (and my knowledge of the English musical) helped.

The best thing about it is the very different orchestration and mixing. This is very refreshing from the English version which I am familiar with. It's a differnet listening experience, if you like. There is a much stronger use of electric guitars, specifically, which is a very different effect. The ordering of the songs has also changed and been moved around.

And, of course, there is something profoundly romantic about the French language which really encapsulates the musical. And, it goes without saying that this is the original language.

Clearly, this album isn't for a casual listener - but if you own several of the English-language albums, I can't advise you highly enough to give this one a try. I promise you won't be disappointed!

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting experience......... 15 Mar 2003
Format:Audio CD
Well, being english, I thought that buying this album would be a huge mistake as it is sung in French. I was proved wrong! It just goes to show - you can still enjoy a musical or music, whatever language its sung in. Les Miserables is of course a French concept and is based in France so the singing ties in well - just how they would have sung at the barricades!
The quality of singing is alright and the cast singing all together is extremely entertaining. It is a most intresting experience, listning in a different language - I suggest you try it! Although, I do prefer the English version, you still get the gist of the story.
I only recommend this album IF: you have already seen the show or listned to the English version (because then you know whats going on and can enjoy the music more), or simply if you want to spend some money on something better than chocolate. Hope this helps - and if you buy it. Enjoy a relaxing evening full of romance, battles, barricades, good and evil!

5.0 out of 5 stars I prefer the French version 21 Feb 2013
By wilmafl
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having studied french for the past4 years and have had to stop going to classes due to health problems, I needed an input of French to cheer me up. I love the French version, there seems to be more passion in how the songs are sung. But since going to see the film version, I have since purchased the anniversary DVD and the english cd version. Cant get enough of LES MIS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 2 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The CD comes with the words. It makes a useful additional resourse for those studing French. It is taken from a story written by one of Frances most talented writers, set at a most pivotal point in French history. I do not usually like musicals but this Original French version is magic.

Bought for my daughter, hence the title. However it seems to have gone down quite well and compares well to the later productions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Les Mis
Interesting concept album in the original french. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this version as most of the characters can sing, unlike the 2012 film.
