Based on the three 5-star reviews that were on the amazon website before I ordered, I decided to buy this learning pack to help my grandson (5 and a half years old) learn French. I have taught French to older children and adults of all ages and needed some materials to start off a younger child.
First of all the book is rather short at only 67 pages - lots of pictures and some large print - plus appendices giving word lists and song lyrics. The CDs do not have a track listing - a major shortcoming in my opinion as it is useful to be able to pick up from where you left off or go back to an earlier song or topic. This means you have to keep a note of the tracks or write them in the book. And the spoken instructions are not always on separate tracks to the songs and exercises making it almost impossible to pick up a specific place on the CD. The spoken instructions refer to "re-winding the tape"! No one at McGraw Hill has updated this since they obviously switched to CDs which is pretty poor. Perhaps that's why no-one has got round to drawing up a track listing.
The book and exercises are somewhat meagre. The pack looks quite large but, like those expensive cosmetics, when you open it you find there are 3 CDs (one of which is for the parent or instructor) and a rather slim book. If the packaging fitted its contents you'd be hard pressed to justify the price I suppose!
One thing in its favour: the speakers on the CDs are native French speakers with clear diction. There are also some useful ideas for consolidating learning. BUT I am having to supplement this pack with my own materials and ideas to do a really good job of teaching French to a complete beginner. This is probably fine if you want to use it to reinforce learning that is already taking place at school or elsewhere, but in my opinion it's not enough on its own.
