BBC Review

After 20 years and 50 million album sales, Alan Jackson stands for just about everything that makes people huffy about mainstream country: pedal steel guitar, oom-pah bass lines, check-shirt fables and barefaced sentimentality.

Listen to a Jackson song, though, and you’re hearing something that tells millions of ‘ordinary’ Americans about themselves. And who thinks that’s easy? Freight Train comes straight down the rails of a much-loved tradition, the latest through traffic on a journey that has earned this self-effacing southerner an enviable reputation.

Long after the great age of songwriting in New York and Los Angeles, Nashville might be the last holdout for the craft of American music. And, hitting town with a head full of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard in 1986, Jackson has made himself the craftsman others dream of emulating.

His successful resistance to the pop/rock postures of superstars like Garth Brooks and Shania Twain is one of the reasons country has weathered a diversion that threatened to derail it altogether. So it’s no pleasure to report that this contract-fulfilling final album, concluding Jackson’s two decades with Arista Nashville, isn’t going to create any converts.

Buoyantly produced, it finds the singer leaning a little too comfortably on the conversational Georgia drawl of his baritone, and the writer coming up a little shy on the sort of detail and wordplay that lifts a cliché. True Love Is a Golden Ring’s platitudes are plain slack from the man who once wrote Three Minute Positive Not Too Country Up-Tempo Love Song.

Four songs at the heart of the album sound like singles (including the personable Tail Lights Blue, with its Jackson-esque “They should’ve made ‘I can’t stay’/ Sound like ‘I love you’” lyric), but they’re all from other writers. The eight originals compare poorly to the 17 on 2008’s Good Time, and it’s tempting to imagine some musical nuggets have been stowed away for the other side of the contractual crossroads.

In 2009 Jackson turned 50 and put his Nashville mansion up for sale. Freight Train will pump up the career numbers, but it sounds like time for a change. --Ninian Dunnett

Having lived with Jackson's previous album for the last two years, I was tempted to award this CD four and a half stars rather than five, simply because "Good Time" was such a fantastic album. But that wouldn't be fair, cos this too is a superb collection!

having listened to it a couple of times now I can say I've enjoyed all 12 tracks but it's the central block of four songs - the title track, "Tail Lights Blue", "Lovin' Thing", and "Til the End" - which really make it stand out from the crowd. I love the way Jackson lets the musicians shine, as he does on "Freight Train", with lots of really tasty instrumental pieces. "Lovin' Thing" sounds like a cross between "Chattahoochee" and one of those early Johnny Cash "boom-chicka-boom" songs and features great guitar. "Tail Lights Blue" is the big 'missing you' song and will make a great single. Finally the big duet with Lee Ann Womack on a Vern Gosdin cover, "Til The End", and probably the best track on the album. A nice mix of fiddle and steel guitar make for a classic country sound, with Womack sounding possibly the best I've ever heard her.

Another great album - thanks Alan!!

Jackson Delivers 2 April 2010
By Angel Delta TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

Alan Jackson is a country singer! He doesn't sing country pop or Nash Vegas or Countrypolitan. He sings traditional country music with a modern twist and he writes much of his own material including eight of the songs on this album. It's his ear for a hook that makes so many of his albums irresistable.

Soft and sentimental they may be but songs like "After 17", "Every Now And Then", "Big Green Eyes" and "True Love Is A Golden Ring" are beautifully crafted and typical of Jackson's ability to offer re-assurance that all is well with this world.

But he has chosen his covers well too and his duet with Lee Ann Womack on Vern Gosdin's "Till The End" with its insistent steel guitar is one of the highlights of the album. His driving version of Fred Eaglesmith's title track is a powerful contrast to the album's predominant ballads.

Alan Jackson never disappoints. Bass, fiddle, mandolin, steel guitar, piano, Hammond B3, banjo, wurlitzer and Jackson's warm, country voice combine to deliver another album that will delight his fans and probably create some new ones too.
