Biography

The Pretty Things have been a magnet for controversy since their inception. At a time when the Rolling Stones were seen as the ultimate nonconformists, the Pretty Things made them look tame by comparison. The band members' hair was longer, their lifestyles wilder, and their music louder and more extreme. Although their commercial success was limited, the Pretty Things were able not only ... Freeway Madness is the the 3rd album of what I see as a trilogy by the Pretty Things where they explore their harmonious side - creating beautifully rounded and fully realised songs - reminiscent of the Beatles and Pink Floyd etc
yet retaining a unique individualism of style and sound.
As with S F SORROW and PARACHUTE (the other two from the trilogy) Freeway Madness benefits by not having been "done to death" as can be the case with The Beatles and the like.

I just cannot possibly let the review above be the only word here on this album. I bought it when it came out in 1972, and it's been a firm favourite of mine ever since then. I love all the songs, They're definitely not just "ok"...they're fantasic. There's not a bad track anywhere at all on this album, and the music is way above average, too. If you're a collector of classic '70s albums, then go on, find that adventurous spirit within. You won't regret it.. And furthermore, to these ears the remastered version sounds even better than ever. All in all, a highly underated album, and one of my all time personal favourites.

Originally released in 1972, 'Freeway Madness' was the band's eight album. By this point, the Pretty Things had more or less seen better days. Thought this CD reissue was a bit too mainstream / radio friendly for me. Believe I liked the six added bonus cuts better than the actual lp. Tunes here I thought were 'okay' were the beautifully done "Havana Bound", "Over The Moon", the semi-rocking "Rip Off Train" and "Another Bowl" (you just gotta love that title). Awhile back, I've seen this CD noted in dealer's catalogs as the band's 'last good one'.

Freeway Madness **** 4 Jan 2002
By rick hoffman - Published on Amazon.com

Yes this is not the Pretty Things best album. Yes It is not unlike other albums of its time. But This is one of the bands key pieces that shows how after spending about a year in the next studio from the Beatles that the band had absorbed their influences and perhaps had more successfully than any other band of this era combined the biting style of the Stones with the vocazl harmonic stylizations of the Beatles. At least one side of this album is great as a whole. The other side gets a little too much out there which is why it is not a *****. This is a band that has a catalog of 30 albums which are for the mostpart great albums. Not a stinker in the batch. Freeway Madness certainly is a fine moment!

A prog rocker should have. 16 Mar 2003
By Dick Palmer - Published on Amazon.com

Yep, the moments of impressive skills here are too many to be neglected. A well produced rock album ranging from hard to soft. Maybe i choose song #1 as the favourite. The young guitarist Peter Tolsen (b.51) was indeed a gifted player with a clear tonal range, steady bending and a solid blues rock bottom with
musicality.
(The car seen on the album was actually David Gilmour's car! (guitarist of Pink Floyd) ).

Pretty Things Enter the 70s 5 July 2004
By Morten Vindberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
More than two years had gone since Pretty Things released their previous album, the highly acclaimed "Parachute". In the meantime there had been a split-up, a change of label, Peter Tolson was new on guitar and Stuart Brooks had replaced Wally Allen, who still contributed in producing the "new" album.

Whereas "Parachute" had been greatly inspired by the Beatles, "Freeway Madness" is much more a progressive 1970`s album - a change they persecuted with the next two albums "Silk Torpedo" and "Savage Eye"

The album sets off quietly with "Love is Good". With "Havana Bound" they enter the main-stream hard-rocking sound of the seventies. Both opening tracks have been added in fine live performances as bonus-tracks.

Peter Tolson`s autobiographical ""Peter" is a fine acoustic song, which has been put together with "Rip Off Train". "Over the Moon" is for me the outstanding track; fine melody and great vocals.

Second half of the album has its highlight in the uplifting "Country Road" .

The four live-tracks are great additions to a solid album.

very pretty 24 Aug 2007

An interesting album by the Pretty Things. One minute I think I'm listening to some smooth country number. The next minute the music changes gears and turns into heavy glam-rock with guitar solos thrown in for good measure. I guess that's the main thing that makes the Pretty Things such an interesting band overall. Pick up Freeway Madness for something exciting and refreshing.

Pretty Things - 'Freeway Madness' (Original Masters) 17 Dec 2005
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Originally released in 1972, as 'Freeway Madness' looks to be the band's sixth lp. By this point, it was apparent that the Pretty Things have seen better days. I've always felt this album was too mainstream for me. Think I liked this CD reissue's six (6) bonus tracks better than I do the actual album. Tunes that I thought were okay include the beautifully done "Havana Bound", "Over The Moon", the semi-rocking "Rip The Train" and "Another Bowl?" (love that song title). You might see noted in dealer's catalogs, listings, etc. that 'Freeway Madness' was the Pretty Thing's -last good one-. Line-up: Phil May - vocals Pete Tolson (I didn't realize that Dick Taylor didn't play on this record) - guitar, John Povey - keyboards & vocals, Stuart Brooks - bass and Skip Allan - drums.
