Format: DVD
This is a dramatisation of the life of a real serial killer, named William Bonin. Some of his enduring notoriety stems from the fact that he was the first ever American criminal to be executed by lethal injection.
He'd cruise the highways of California in his transit van and pick up male hitchhikers. He had an accomplice, Verne, who helped him to lure hikers into his transit van, whereupon Bonin would fly into a rage and strangle or stab his victims. Verne would take photographs of the cadavers and of Bonin celebrating his latest kill.
If this film is faithful to Bonin's character, it would appear that he had only two moods. He could be affable and personable, charming and sociable, with a big, cheesy grin plastered on his face. Or, in a heartbeat, he could turn into a monster, all fury and madness, unable to control his actions, and happy to brutalise, torture and kill his victims. A real-life Jekyll and Hyde, if you like.
One of Bonin's potential victims, Kyle, saves himself, by killing another young guy at Bonin's behest. He then becomes friends with Bonin and Verne.
The scenes of violence in the back of the van are vividly portrayed and actually quite disturbing. There's lots of cannabis use, Bonin used it to relax his victims before attacking them, and he also used it recreationally with his buddies.
I agree with some of the other reviewers here, the film is definitely missing something, but it's hard to put your finger on. The actor who plays Bonin gives a slightly hammy, rather one dimensional performance. When he's being the nice Bonin, it's more kind of creepy rather than genuinely charming, unlike, say, Hannibal Lector as portrayed by Anthony Hopkins.

William Bonin was a serial killer who was known as the Freeway Killer. This film drama about the man isn't bad but how true it is, how much is missing or what artistic licence has been taken I don't know. I'd never heard of Bonin until I saw this film so for me it was just another serial killer flick. I thought it was quite entertaining. The acting was good especially from the guy playing the killer in the way one moment he's all jovial and friendly and the next he's gone psycho. The dialogue was well written and the plot was solid as we follow the story. It's a good entry into the serial killer genre of films and the commentary was also very revealing about the film and the man.
Extras include a com, featurette and trailer. USA Release Region 1.

unlike a lot of the serial killer generations this is a freshily presented and rather cunning drama about the real serial killer William Bonin,I dont think its perfect but its near to perfect as its nicely presented and really gets in to the whole feeling of belief.following the lonely life of one sadistic serial killer who has a boring life mainly involving picking up young boys off the side of the roads and strangeling each one of his victims with rope but when one boy gets in to his car the boy reveals some truly disturbing secerts about his life and Bonin is drawn in by them leading to their freindship the boy helps out with some of the killings,a enjoyable drama not to violent not gory but rather good and is a real treat for those seeking a film with a good and interesting storyline capturing the inner demons and killer instincts of the sickest men in humanity.great film

Scott Leet is a revelation in this psychodrama about William Bonin.
At first sadistic and arrogant before his mania overwhelms him and he descends into a spiral of suspicion and paranoia, Leet's portrayal would seem to be bang on the money. I found it riveting.

Surprisingly good for a small budget, quite short and succinct film thriller. It conveys a lot of fear and emotion with very believable principal roles that sets this film apart from the run of the mill serial killer movie.
