Product Description

When it comes to one-night stands, Malachi Bishop has “rules”. No pillow talk. No sleeping over. No planning a future hook-up. First names only. It’s just sex, not a prelude to love. But when Cole Malcolm, a smooth-talking management consultant, woos Malachi into bed, the rulebook is tossed out the window.
The one-time fling leaves Cole reeling: Malachi is his first real shot at happiness, his “forever” man, and he’s determined to show Malachi just how good they could be together. But Malachi doesn’t believe in happily-ever-after, and dodges Cole’s play for his heart. After all, Malachi is still mourning the loss of Taylor Blanchard, whom he hoped to love forever. Then there’s Zach Brennan, a handsome twenty-five-year-old and student at the college where Malachi teaches. Falling for Zach could destroy everything he’s worked for, but Malachi can’t help himself.

Caught by love and in its betrayal, it’s a later affair with a beautiful stranger that changes Malachi’s life most dramatically. Now Malachi must confront his present and his past that bring into question the larger fantasies of home and his place in the world.

Unappetizing, Confusing and Slow 2 Feb 2012

Presumably, the main character, Malachi is in love. It's hard to tell who with because every time you turn around, he seems to be sleeping with someone. He thinks he might be in love with Cole so he sleeps with a student . . . who dies. He claims to be in deep grief from the student's death because he so desperately loved the student and yet he sleeps with someone else.

The author made the character emotionally unattractive and almost icky. The story is a mishmash of his memories . . . all showing he's a shallow man. He is supposed to have lost the love of his life for which he is supposedly deeply grieving and then shortly thereafter, he sleeps with someone else. He doesn't know why. That is the crux of the story . . . "I screw people and I don't know why. I've lost someone I love or I think I am in love, let me screw someone else. Whoa is me."

I say presumably Malachi is the main character because the story switches from his voice to Cole's. Both seem pitiful. In fact, it is as if they are the same person. Depressive men who latch on to anyone who shows them a bit of kindness or attention.

The story is horribly tedious. Prolonged memories of Malachi and his former lovers for no apparent reason than to show he is disloyal emotionally.

It's boring. But at least it was free. I don't recommend it.

The characters are not appealing. There is no reason for you to like them or to root for them. There is no reason for Cole to be attracted to Malachi, especially after Malachi keeps heaping abusive behavior on him. There is no reason any one would be attracted to Malachi.

It is as if the author threw together something and did not know how to connect it. Eh! It was free, though a waste of time to read.

Freestyle Love 2 Mar 2012

The blurb had so much promise, but the story itself couldn't live up to it. The writing is sometimes hard to follow, jumping from point of view and switching to flash backs without much warning. Internal dialogue is presented in the same form as external dialogue, with quotations, leaving puzzlement as to if whatever character said certain things out loud or not.

There are two suicides within the first fifty pages, settling the tone of the story into a pit of angst. At least half of the book is full of the character's internal thoughts and feelings, assessing every small point of the plot until there is no longer meaning to be gleaned.

The erotic scenes were mechanical, lacked emotion, depth, any sort of coloring. There were attempts to remedy this, but it was only in how `connected' the character felt and how `in love' they were. It didn't change the flow of the scenes, which, by the way, would always be cut off abruptly, shifting time into the aftermath.

Pick it up if you're in the mood for some intense drama. I was never into that sort of thing.

Absorbing characters 22 Jan 2012

This is a great book, full of unique characters who are on a journey of self-discovery. I particularly enjoyed watching the relationship dynamics develop throughout the book.
