Third track to be released off the much aclaimed "Exciter" album. Freelove is the first love song-esq single to be released by the band for many years and although the song has some thought provoking lyrics within it, "If you've suffered enough, I can understand what you're frightend of".
Freelove seems to lack the edge that DM are famous for.
The song starts well enough with some synth samples but the intro is too long and I felt bored even before the lyrics had started. When Gahan sings "If you've been hiding from love", the song does drag your attention back, I think this is supposed to make some relevence to the listener to make them look inside themselves, but it doesn't work.
It becomes frustrating when the song is progressing and the lyrics are just been repeated twice, one after the other, although Gahan does try to differentiate by changing his vocal tone.
There are some good points on the CD though, Martin Gore's guitar playing is spectatcular and Dave Gahan does get his moment toward the end of the track when he sings "Hey girl, you,ve got to take this moment, then let it slip away" with such passion you would think he was going to cry.
This is a disappointly weak song from the boys from Basingstoke, it lacked the edge that make their songs, to me, Freelove sounds like it should belong to another band. For DM,it sounds suprisingly like a trackk from the Manic Street Preachers "This is my truth" album.
No doubt that this was a hurried release as there are much better tracks on the album that would've faired much better in the charts, but then again DM were never in this buisness for their chart positions.
Freelove is definately an album only track not as a stand alone single. I can only see it being bought by the die-hard DM fans and yes it will get a good chart position because of this.
