Book Description

10 July 2008 0340954035 978-0340954034
Her husband was killed in the Great War. His wife is dead. Why not journey to the other side of the world and start again from scratch? What does it matter if they don't know each other, they will in time, after all?

Norah thinks it is the most stupid idea she has ever heard. But Andrew needs no persuading. His kids are without a mother, he lives in a Lancashire town with no prospects: he can't wait to build a new life for himself in Australia. The government will even give ex-servicemen a farm, as long as they clear the land themselves. The only thing he needs is a wife to join him and time is short.

Then Norah's father dies and there is nowhere for her or her daughter to go. For the first time in her life she decides to do something crazy. It may be madness to follow a man she barely knows to an untamed land of heat, spiders and endless bush far from home, but it may also be the answer to all her dreams.

Review

Praise for Anna Jacobs:
'Catherine Cookson fans will cheer!' (Peterborough Evening Telegraph )

'Anna Jacobs' books are deservedly popular. She is one of the best writers of Lancashire sagas around.' (Historical Novels Review )

'Once again you have given us a story that has me hooked from the first page to the last. The characters are so alive that I am loath to call them characters, they are people - so real that you almost feel for them' (Reader from Scotland on OUR MARY ANN )

'An exciting book of immensely brilliant character portrayal and a great storyline' (Bangor Chronicle on OUR EVA )

'Another cracking read with a vivid insight into family relationships' (Coventry Evening Telegraph on OUR EVA )

This is typical of Anna Jacobs, I never want her stories to end! This story about ordinary folk trying to make a go of it in Australia is addictive, I didn't want to put it down and could have read the whole thing in one go, if I'd had the time. Well done Anna, more of the same please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Waltzing Matilda 2 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
'Freedom's Land' by Anna Jacobs is for the adventurous spirit. It is the first time my wife and I have read this Author and we certainly wish to read more. The Characters are true to life and it is a great story. It has every element of surprise and challenge. The brave souls who left our shores motivated by either the loss of Loved Ones in post-WW1 Britain or simply the opportunity to make good and give their children a lasting legacy are forgotten heroes of their time. The story deals with the fanciful proposals and expectation of these Pioneers, followed by the base reality of their arrival. The merging of individuals and cultures set against the harsh backdrop of the Australian Bush makes for great interest and anticipation. The Aussies of the novel do extend a hand of Friendship but they expect the full quota of determination and effort from the new 'Pom' arrivals. They resent any show of half-heartiness. Travellers to the Western Province of Australia would now see a different terrain to the one faced by the characters in the book. It is therefore a very informative read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Freedom's Land 6 Sep 2009

As always from Anna Jacobs a fantastic read, characters that draw you in instantly without being overly descriptive, just enough to paint an initial picture. I have read all this authors books and never been dissapointed yet, long may she carry on writing.
