This book is the second in the 'Freedom' series, and as one might expect, one encounters a lot of characters found in the first book of the series. This is not just a rehash of the first book though. The excitment grows as Zainal, shows where his loyalties lie, and starts to work on his plans for the future. We are drawn into the lives of the people of Botany once more, and the climax of the book leaves us waiting with baited breath for the next volume. I loved this book because it kept me waiting to find out what Zainal and his partner Kris would do next, and how they would cope with a life where he was considered an enemy by most of those that they live with. It really shows human nature at it's best, and at it's worst!

this series started well but has already started to go downhill. my main gripe being the characters; the good guys are all perfect, adept at a wide range of skills ( just becuse they did whatever once when they were about 12 - yes i am exagerating, but not by much ) and can do no wrong. while the 'villains' of the piece appear to have no redeeming qualities ... even when they do exactly the right thing, because if they don't happen to agree with the good guys they must be wrong and can't possibly be allowed to have their own opinion. all th mosre annoying because Anne's characterisation used to be so good and even the lead heroes had their faults.

The development of the characters is good and the ideas behind the new world an excellent model for people to follow leaving prejudice behind. Anne McCaffrey always a good read.
