The cover of Freedom Wind gives a big clue to what you can expect from this album. A collage of shots of beaches and boys - the band I assume . I don't know if this was deliberate , I can't see it not being , but if that doesn't give you a large inkling then the first harmonious outpourings of opening track "Forever" will nail it for you.
Way too heartfelt to be considered as a tongue in cheek pastiche Freedom Wind is a tasteful homage that follows on from last years Explorers Club E.P. , which contributes three of it's four tracks to this album. A sextet from South Carolina The Explorers Club though are actually cleverer and more subtle than they may appear on first listen.
Though their music predominantly recall's The Beach Boys of the mid sixties it also skilfully integrates other genres into the arrangements. "Honey , I Don't Know Why" has a gravely rock vocal for the verses over the honey dripping harmonies while "Lost My Head" flips banjo slyly into the mix . The slightly sickly sweet ballad "If You Go" runs silvery trails of pedal steel. The title track is a Hammond heavy slow burn song that sounds more Whiskeytown in a good mood till the American Idol histrionics of the chorus. "Hold Me Tight" is a splendid woozy estimation of what the Beach Boys would sound like crossed with Angelo Badallamenti . Other songs like the gloriously melodic "Do You Love Me", the skittish "Last Kiss" or the more lugubrious "Don't Forget The Sun" are more sincere in their approximation of the surf gods sound.
Instrumental "Summer Air " and the plodding ballad "Safe Distance" reveal that the band sometimes have only gossamer thin tunes to hang the glistening harmonies on and the lyrics are a little cringe worthy at times .Explorers Club could be accused of a lack of imagination by being so slavishly in debt to another bands sound but by making it so obvious even a half deaf Iron Maiden roadie would notice and by carrying it out with such enthusiasm and with such care to detail they have made an album that is thoroughly enjoyable to listen to without feeling guilty that you should really be listening to the guys who did it in the first place. Worth exploring .
