Product Description

Product Description

The observations of a Russian doctor, Konstantin Buteyko, suggest that breathing patterns are fundamental to the natural and effective treatment of asthma. Buteyko believes that only shallow breathing, which increases the proportion of carbon dioxide in our systems, enables the body to function efficiently. The first clinical trial of Buteyko's controversial treatment, conducted in Australia, showed that 90 per cent of asthma sufferers were able significantly to reduce their dependence on medication. Alexander Stalmatski worked with Buteyko in Russia, and then practised the Buteyko Technique in Australia and England. In this book he explains the physiology behind the theory, describes how the Buteyko method works, and provides simple self-help exercises for asthma sufferers who wish to treat themselves. This revised edition incorporates recent discoveries and experiences.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book will not free you from asthma, 16 Aug 2002
This review is from: Freedom from Asthma: Buteyko's Revolutionary Treatment (Hale Clinic health library) (Paperback)
If you actually read the book it will tell you that it does not teach you the Buteyko technique that will "free you from asthma". It tells you you have to pay a bucket full of money to go on a course.
Personally I had the feeling that I had been mis-sold this book; perhaps I should have read the reviews more closely.
This form of marketing makes me very sceptical of the technique in general, although I have no first hand experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars a sales book by Stalmatski, 12 Mar 2002

Dr. Katherine Kahn (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freedom from Asthma: Buteyko's Revolutionary Treatment (Hale Clinic health library) (Paperback)
I recently attended a Buteyko breathing course and found it very helpful. I completely agree that the techniques are really useful and important. However, I think that the courses are really expensive when the techniques could be quite easily explained in a book (Stalmatski doesn't describe the breathing exercises, instead he just urges people to go on a course which costs £290). Teresa Hale's book Breathing Free is better in this regard, as she at least gives a cursory description of some breathing techniques. It's too bad that such a straighforward, helpful and simple approach to dealing with asthma and other respiratory problems hasn't become more widespread - and personally I have the feeling that this is partly due to the fact that too many people are just trying to make money off it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile introduction to Buteyko, 30 Jun 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Freedom from Asthma: Buteyko's Revolutionary Treatment (Hale Clinic health library) (Paperback)
This book is a good introduction to the Buteyko method of alleviating the symptoms of asthma. It covers the reasoning behind the techniques, and details case studies. Like all Buteyko books, it's not designed to teach you the technique, although it does outline exercises -- you're advised to attend lessons to learn the technique.

The book is also very readable, written in everyday language and also surprisingly short - expect to read the book withinin a day or two.
