    There are loads of different hard drives on the market all pretty similar, this is the entry level offering from Freecom the only real difference being that this one comes in a plastic enclosure and the better one is aluminium. All the other brands Western Digital, Seagate, LACIE......all have plastic enclosures as well.

    Freecom use the latest Hitachi hard drives and after an hour near silent use it gave off very little heat.

    This drive is the best value per GB I could find it looks good it was delivered next day and from what I have read on the web Freecom customer services / support are very helpful and quick to respond.

    Last thing to mention it is hot swappable so you don't need to turn off your computer you can just plug it in and start using. No need for a mains plug either its bus powered - pulls power through the USB cable.

    There is now a 320GB version of this drive available (£74.99 on Amazon, search for 30722)

    Deciding not before time , that it was probably a good idea to back up all the precious music, photo,s etc on my PC, lest it explode in a shower of sparks and little shiny bits i diligently researched the best back up hard-drive to purchase. Eventually more through sheer tedium than anything i plumped for the Freecom 250GB.
    The other reviews on this page were also an important factor and from my experience the good reviews on here were spot on. It,s a neat little thing is the Freecom , not too surprising for a portable hard-drive i suppose , and quite slinky and sexy looking in it,s own way. There is some software that comes with it but i , being a bit of a numpty when it comes to overly techie things , decided i could do without that.Consequently i just plugged it into the USB port and it showed up in "My Computer" as a drive called "Freecom" which enabled me to either drag and drop files or "send to " it.
    I would,nt say that transfer was especially quick but i feel that was as much to do with the performance of my computer as anything. Even better the drive does not require a separate power source - it just sucks its juice via the USB . Plus there is a cool looking blue light flashing away during the process , not a great selling point it must be said but it kept me entertained.
    I,m no expert on these things, as no doubt anyone reading this has swiftly concluded, but i,d say the Freecom 250 is a drive well worth considering either in this or the 320GB version especially as the price is so competetive.

    I bough this product a week ago. I am using it on Mac.

    Installation was quick and painless as there wasn't any. I simply plugged in the USB and it worked. I re-formatted the drive in Mac OS Extended format and am using it as a back-up drive. Mac Time Machine took maybe an hour to back-up 50GB of data, very impressive speed.

    The only downside so far: the drive is a bit noisy. To be clear: this is not the read/write noise, but it simply the noise of either the drive spinning or there may be a fan inside the casing. Either way, I can hear the drive quite clearly when it sits on my desk.

    I have had a smaller Freecom drive before that didn't make any noise whatsoever.

    Overall rating: 4 out of 5.
