The drive's main enclosure has a velvety-smooth rubbery-plastic finish, and has a black plastic section at the end which houses the in-built plug lead. There are no power or USB secondary sockets. The lead 'hinges' courtesy of its own flexible material, so I don't feel comfortable bending it too much. So, unless the drive is on your desk next to your PC's USB socket, you're sure to end up needing a USB extension lead. In the lead's closed position, it's held in place firmly by friction and by a magnet that grips the metal USB 'A' plug. The light-blue status LED is solid-ON when nothing's happening, and phases on/off smoothly when there's data transfer. On that front, it's totally silent in operation.
The drive takes 36 seconds to appear on my USB2 laptop, and copying from internal drive via USB2 runs at 14.6 MegaBytes/s (I copied a single 500 MB file). Also, it works fine on my little USB-to-TV media player. I have an older USB1 PC with a USB2 PCI card installed and, on this, the drive appears then disappears, with errors popping up on the screen, despite all other USB2 devices working fine.
I'm giving it 4 stars because, despite all its merits, I think the lead's 'hinge' is a weak point, the drive is slow to appear on my desktop, and it's the only thing that doesn't work on my USB2 card. Besides, my Silicon Armor A70 got 5 stars because there was no 'but' when I reviewed that drive, and the Freecom attempts to occupy the same market space, so I can't give it the same rating. Of course, if you're after a USB3 drive that's going to sit quietly on your PC, connected via a USB extension lead, then it would get 5 stars; assuming USB3 works, which I couldn't test.

i ve have and older one of these (320 gig)and another 2 of this model. they are very well built. drop resistant and also seem dust and water resistant as well. ive taken all three of them to afghan many times, more dust then you can imagine, wet weather and the heat didnt effect these in the least. unlike my laptop and other drives. now the freecom ones are all i use.

I have used this hard drive for 6 months. It still works no flows here :). I have a concern about the build in cable it is great to have this but it would be nice if was longer and more flexible, now i need to carry additional cable to be sure I can fit the hard drive on any computer. But this is just a minor issue. Transfer rates are good, I guess for the price this drive rocks :).

This is my third purchase of a Freecom Tough Drive. It is compact, robust, well protected, stylish, and it works very well.

The accompanying software is very useful.

My only reservation is the potential vulnerability of the integral USB lead (inevitably, sometimes it will have to support the weight of the disk). If Freecom provided a separate mini USB socket on the HDD it would make it more versatile and less vulnerable.

After many years of experiences with many external discs, the Freecom Tough Drive proved to be the toughest of them all ;) True, I did not try other tough drives (e.g. from Toshiba and others), so I can only compare with the "normal", "sensitive" portable discs. With these disks my basic problem were the cables and/or the mini USB ports, which sooner or later stopped functioning after approximatelly a year of regular use.
I used previous version of Tough Drive (250 Gb), and only now after many (5+ ?) years of regular use, including the fieldwork, trekking, few 1 m drops and similar it started to have some problems with the reading / writting performance. Before I format it (maybe it will solve the problem - but even if not, it served long enough ;), I have bought the new, bigger and faster one (1 Tb, USB 3), and so far it functions perfectly.
I recommend it!

Have purchased a lot of tough drives over the years. Never had one fail. If only all the machines I work on had USB 3.0

I have several of these Tough Drives in different capacities. Very compact, light and robust - haven't actually tried dropping one but they get carted around in my case on a regular basis. Used extensively for backups and travel - no problems with any of them. The integral connector means there's no cables to lose. Small enough to slip in jacket pocket. Job done. Oh and free delivery still arrived the day after ordering.

Tough Drives are great hard drives, easy to use, and robust. This is my fourth - the others are all still in use! Keep running out of space, this last one is 1TB. I myself don't bother with the password software, I just plug it in and play, I find that simpler as I don't travel much about with mine. I have not had any trouble with them in all the years I have used them. I only manually back up, don't use any automatic back up software, not adventurous enough...
