Freecom are no sports!,
This review is from: Freecom 35181 750GB USB 2.0 ToughDrive Sport Hard Drive (Accessory)
I purchased 2 units. From the marketing of this sport hard drive all my requirements for such a drive were ticked. Portability, toughness and USB powered. Hey, even an eyelet ring too. However both units failed right from the start! During copying data to the drives an error dialogue was displayed explaining that connectivity had been lost and the copy had failed! OK, I am a Linux / Unix user and have used Freecom products quite successfully in the past together with other manufactures without a single instance of a problem. So being optimistic that this problem could be resolved I phoned the UK Freecom help desk. Right from the beginning once they learned I was not a Windows user their attitude changed to being very unhelpful. I politely pointed out that users have open choices as to their operating systems and USB is fully supported. In a nutshell they were not prepared to help so please be warned. I consequently emailed the senior support manager asking for help. He did not bother responding. I lastly emailed the German head office asking for help and they did not bother responding either! My own research has uncovered that there is small print. This small print states that an external power supply may be needed in order for the drives to function correctly! Well If this is the case then users will have to carry this around with them, hardly the portable drive as marketed! I bear no grudge towards Freecom. I am a happy computer professional earning a living from Unix and Linux for the last 10 years but am now out of pocket by around 200UKP unless I can find suitable power supplies. Freecom do offer these for free but are as they are rude and do not answer my requests for help I may have park this one. I have consequently advised my staff and all customers to be careful with Freecom products and bear in mind the appalling customer support. It is a completive market out there so I look forward to using alternatives in the future.
