Superb 2 Feb 2010
After much research into external hard drives, I decided to go for this one, and I'm very pleased I did. Freecom may not be the best known name on the market, but I have experience of their products. A couple of years ago, I bought an external lightscribe CD/DVD rewriter from them, and it's excellent.
My first impressions of this drive were a little odd - I'm not into rubber or anything!! - but you just want to touch this. Lol. Unlike most hardware, it's soft, warm, and looks great. I plugged it in, booted my pc up, and there it was. I re-formatted it to NTFS and decided to partition it in one sector of 200Gb for backing up my system, and the other 800Gb for all my media files. All done in 3 hours. I read a review here where someone said it took 12 hours to re-format??? Weird. I can't imagine why - he must have a very slow pc, or did something wrong.
I was a little worried about it being fanless, but I've had it running for several hours now and it's not even warm, (apart from it's natural rubbery warmth)!!! Oh, and it's TOTALLY silent. Amazing! Data transfer rate is fast - better than I expected from USB.
The supplied software wasn't any use to me, so I got rid of it. However, I did go onto Freecom's website and downloaded their pc backup software. Very user friendly and very efficient.
One word of caution - and a real criticism - the USB cable is only 23 inches long!! That is SO TIGHT of Freecom when you are paying good money for what is a high quality product. Cheap sods!!! The drive looks cool enough to have it on your desktop, but I have to have it hidden away sitting on top of my tower under the desk. Not at all impressed with that. Oh yes, and despite what all the descriptions say, there is NO light on this drive to tell you it's on or working!! Not a big deal, but misleading. No on/off switch either, but I don't care cos I always turn my system off at the mains when it's not being used.
So far, I'd highly recommend this drive. I may come back in 3 months and update this, but right now I'm seriously thinking of getting another!! Delighted.
Oh, and thanks Amazon. Usual fantastic delivery.

PROMISED UPDATE!! I've been running this drive for weeks now and am absolutely delighted with it. My PC has a 320Gb hard drive which is partioned for Operating System/Data, and as I mentioned earlier, I partitioned this one too. I can find no difference in speed between working with my internal drive or this one!! I've actually got to the point where I now use this drive for all my photoshop and graphics work. Video files and music play back smoothly, picture files open instantly and I am so impressed. (Mind you, I do have 3 gig of RAM and a very fast processor and video card, but this performance is way better than any external drive I've owned before). It is totally silent - I've never heard a sound from it - and no matter how hard I work it, it stays cool. Tonight I was burning DVD's from this drive while doing some work from my internal drive and everything worked beautifully.
I honestly can't understand some of the negatives posted here about this drive. I can only assume that those users are doing something wrong. I would recommend this drive with 10 stars if I could, and I will certainly be buying another for an emergency back up. Just one correction to my first post - don't bother with Freecom's back up software - it turned out to be rubbish!! Get Norton Ghost. Perfection. (Probably the ONLY Norton product that is any use at all)!!!!!! :)
All the best folks.

I got the 1TB drive to back up all my files and have to say it is excellent. This is the third drive I have bought from Freecom (one for work and the other for everyday use) and I have never been disappointed on any occasion. I have went for reliability and after checking all the reviews on this product felt that this was the perfect choice for me. I highly recommend this drive to anyone, you won't regret it.

Arrived within a couple of days, very easy to set up, and very quiet in operation.
Not quite as small as my previous 160G Freecom drive, which was also USB powered.
The XS 1TB model uses external power supply.
Mysteriously there is no LED status light.
Fairly chunky, yes, but also looks/feels very robust, with an integral rubber cover.

Very Poor Reliability
I shall never be buying a freecom product again. I have yet to meet anybody who has got these things to last more than a year and as a data back up that is unacceptable. Read more
