Not recommended if you only plan to use on an Apple Mac,

I was initially very happy with this drive getting good data transfer speeds as I backed up my iMac.
Then I upgraded to Snow Leopard and despite reformatting the drive I was getting a data transfer rate of only ~3Gig an hour. I contacted Freecom support who told me that the firmware needs to be updated to work with Snow Leopard. Whilst I understand that occasionally updates like this are necessary I was very disappointed to discover that the update program they have sent me only runs under Microsoft Windows. Basically their instructions are to disconnect the drive from my iMac, connect it to a firewire enabled PC running Windows, do the update and then reconnect to the iMac or run Windows on my iMac. Based on my experience, if you are a Mac user and don't have access to a firewire equipped PC as well I'd recommend giving this drive a miss.

I have had only good experience with Freecom drives. Some I've been using constantly for many years, proving their reliability to my complete satisfaction. They are truly quiet, they are constantly ready for access with no discernable delay whatsoever, and they're well built -- especially the ones like this in the metal housings which are distinctly impressive pieces of engineering.
I chose the Firewire version this time mostly because the extra cost was less than I'd have needed to spend on another USB hub.

Ordered a Freecom Firewire 1tb external disc on the recommendation of a friend. Very impressed with the solid Germanic feel of it taking it out of the box a la BMW and Mercedes. For Mac owners plug and play sums it up but be aware that if you have a relatively modern Mac with a Firewire 800 only port the cable supplied by Freecom is Firewire 400 and will not fit the back of your Mac. This necessitated me getting a 9 pin to 6 pin (Firewire 800 to 400) cable but it was my fault for not reading the spec correctly. Cable arrived next day and just as previous reviewers have said plug it and off you go. Time machine recognises it straight away and the machine backs your system up and is virtually silent in the background. Thoroughly recommended. It is pre-formatted for Mac but needs re-formatting for Windows users so may not be the ideal product for them. Freecom 31252 FireWire Hard Drive 1TB Mac
