Solar charging is such a good idea, but currently so poorly executed. The Pico is no exception.

The only way to get a decent charge out of it is to have it in direct and bright sunlight all day - forget leaving it in your car or your conservatory, it won't work. Even with a full charge, the internal battery is weak and at full capacity will only give an iPhone about 1/3 of a full charge, so the best way to charge it is either to leave the phone connected and have the charger sat in the sun for the day, or if you're using it for camping to top the device up from your car's 12V socket - but then if you can do that, you're better off with a phone charger for your car anyway.

Devices like this need a more efficient solar panel and a larger capacity battery to be of any real use. These are OK for an emergency charge, but there are other and better means of doing this. This is a prime example of something that's been designed well but built down to minimum cost and it's lost any usefulness it would have had in the process.

solar charger 19 July 2010
product works OK, but has to be in direct sunlight at all times, my daughter used it on a recent Duke of Edinbugh expedition in the Brecon Beacons, glorious sunshine all day long for 4 days and it didnt really add much to the battery.

great idea in principle though, may work better in the Canaries.

The gadget itself is light and kind of frail so don't chuck it about, and needs to be kept in a pouch to save scratching the panel and to keep the adaptors together. Charges off a USB point in a couple of hours and then will provide about a half charge to a phone or MP3 player. Left in the January sun/daylight for 5 hours it charged fractionally, enough to give my phone an emergency boost. Not sure how long it will take to fully charge in Summer sun/daylight or abroad. I find it handy as my Sony MP3 player will only charge off a USB point so I can top it up with the Pico if I'm out and about. But only once before having to find a USB point to recharge the Pico or wait a few days with it lying in the Sun ( Whatever that is) Probably take 5 years given the Sun we've had the last few Summers.
Anyway, for the money, a handy source of emergency power when Outdoors, camping , hiking and stuff so long as you leave it outside all the time and look after it. It won't like rattling around in the bottom of your backpack.

Don't contemplate this flashy piece of fluff
Firstly, my freeloader was dead as the dodo on arrival. Wouldn't accept a USB-driven charge, and wouldn't flash any LEDS. Read more
