Book Description

10 Sep 2013
Freehand examines around 200 sketches and illustrations by young contemporary artists, in each case highlighting and explaining the drawing techniques, qualities, and effects with extended captions, insightful tips, and practical advice. Four main categories unify the book: Principles, Drawing Media, Types of Drawing, and Subjects. Each sketch clearly indicates which principle is being exemplified, the media used, the subject of the drawing, and the type of drawing. A detailed category index at the front of the book lists each page where similar examples may be found, enabling the reader to easily identify and cross reference subjects that have been drawn in similar styles. Advice covers composition, shading, subjects, silhouettes, working with pencils, pen and ink, and charcoal. This helps the reader understand the way in which similar subjects and styles are executed by different artists, and also inspires them to use the tips in the book to build on their own unique talent. If you're going to learn to draw, what's the point of only drawing one way? Standing apart from the host of how-to drawing books, Freehand accesses practical information via the images u a unique approach that focuses on the way subjects can be treated through different drawing styles, rather than elaborate techniques to master one single style. This gives the reader a much wider skill set allowing them to capture or create the essence of any image in more than one way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book of interesting drawing ideas 11 Sep 2013
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Length: 1:25 Mins
Freehand is a book of sketching tips and techniques that invite you to experiment with them. The author Helen Birch is an artist and drawing lecturer based in UK.

There are more than a hundred ideas and techniques featured by different artists. There are doodles, collages, intricate pieces, realistic ones, illustrations and many more.

The examples are rather unconventional. I like them for the unexpected nature and surprise element. For example, some would like to draw on graph papers to make use of the grid lines and some like to wash their paper with colour before painting. There's one who draw on styrofoam cups, others create collages using paper and scissors. There are artists who talk about using subdued colour, bright colours, layered colours or even no colours such as the use of silhouettes.

Anyway, you can check out selected page previews on Amazon. And this book is available as a Kindle edition also.

Freehand is not strictly about art created traditionally. Some artists would use graphics software to touch up. There really aren't any rules, just that all the examples start off hand drawn.

At the back is a brief section on drawing fundamentals. They cover line, tones, colours and materials. It's all elementary stuff for the beginners.

This is an ideas book essentially, rather than a technical book that teaches you how to draw.

If you like doodling, sketching or drawing for fun, or looking for ideas and inspiration to get started, this is a good book to check out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! 10 April 2014

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really love this book! I saw it at the Tate modern gallery and i couldn't wait to go home and order it. It's full of great tips that are easy to follow and there are so many different styles of artwork that can be very inspirational. Also it's lovely because it's quite small in size and it's easy to flick through in your hands.
Great book, would highly recommend!
