I'm not a big fan of "Self Help" books - always expected to be hit with some "10 step way to guaranteed: wealth/health/love/etc" presented in condescending tones by a smug self-proclaimed expert.

So "Free Yourself from Fear" came as a pleasant surprise to read. From the introduction there is no strident bombast, but rather a calm and friendly invitation to explore fear and phobias on all levels from minor insecurities to extreme states such as post traumatic stress, followed by reassurance that any individual can tackle these problems in pursuit of a more positive, happier life.

Case studies used throughout are relevant to the matters being explored and give assurance that the reader is not alone in his/her own individual experiences.

Each chapter is concluded with exercises to practise to combat the type of fear covered. These are straightforward, make sense, and, more importantly, are not too long!

Even those chapters you think may not apply directly to you make for interesting reading and can give fascinating insights into the behaviour of others.

In conclusion: a positive, accessible approach to beating fears and phobias - easy to read and never condescending.

I'm someone who has let anxiety and phobias affect my life for many years. I'm impressed by Dr Atcheson's book - particularly the Case Study format as well as the way she dissects the various causes and types of fear and anxiety and (crucially) then gives practical advice on how to overcome them. I know from experience that the techniques she describes can work. I can recommend this book without reservation.

Fear is something which plagues all of us, and Lucy Atcheson, in her book "Free Yourself From Fear", addresses this primary human emotion head on, with intelligence, clarity and compassion. The title might be gimmicky, but the content certainly is not. The book gives a comprehensive overview of fear in its many guises, and offers the reader a variety of ways in which this emotion can be faced and overcome. Atcheson does not for one moment suggest that fear can simply be got rid of, forever - this would be a false claim and promise, too prevalent in all too many self-help books - but rather encourages us to face it and deal with it, and perhaps even, ultimately, to embrace it. For beyond fear lies its very opposite. As someone who has battled with anxiety and its many faces, I do recommend this concise and practical book, free of pyscho-babble and grounded, rather, in actual science.
