this is a must for everyone who though rick astley stopped after never gonna give you up.
first the free album a collaboration with many big names like michael mcdonald, elton john, rob fisher, the andrae crouch choir and what about jazz giant niels henning orstedt pederson playing bass on some tracks, granted i expected more from his collaborations with mark king, mabe i dreamed of a king bassline in a rick astley song but who can blame me for that?free was a total departure from the factorybased Stock Aitken Waterman sound the 2 previous albums possesed.in my eyes the greatest free tracks are,
IN THE NAME OF LOVE-very soulfull sounding song, with rick backed by a set of decent backing singers a production right out of michael mcdonalds book, still today i like that song very very much, and it's allmost 20years old!!
CRY FOR HELP-Very soulfull again and what a great production, the backing gospel choir gets the best out of a voice that was too limited in a factory based production before, what a voice we suddenly hear,he could have become the next michael mcdonald or modern tom jones.also proving he can write good song.
WONDERFULL YOU-mabe it sounds too much as "you make me feel(like a natural woman)"but it still should have been a single, another soulfull ballad with that jazz giant on the bass.other good songs like MOVE RIGHT OUT,THE BOTTOM LINE,make it an alsbu with some great ups and a few downs, but it is a must for anyone looking for a couple of decent rick astley songs after never gonna give you up.
i think his very best all together.
the moog basslines say it's early 90's but used very delicatly so they are not too obvious, the production is very good despite some basslines, all in all it's a timeless production that gives more than any rick asltye album.after allmost 20years i still love some songs endlessly!
-A DREAM FOR US-the best song Rick Astley ever wrote and recorded,it has a midtempo feel,a great fender rhodes backing him and a melody only to be sung by a great vocalist, this song is one i can mix between people like marvin gaye, luther vandross, michael mcdonald this is how good i think this is!
-EVERYTIME-another midtempo marvin gay tipe song, even the groove is very mercy mercy me,but that all it's no rip off,it's a great soulfull track with his voice shining like never before.
-ENOUGH LOVE-the third mid tempo and also a diamond in disguise, please check these songs out if you like soul you will like it,you will see that this is one of the most underrated singer around and nobody credits him for these great songs,
the album has other great tracks, ballads, some uptempo's witch make this album in my eyes his best.the song have a special kind of quality that i can enjoy still after allmost 20years.
a pity there wern't more after that album in that style.it would make his legacy so much greater.
So anyone who loves a good soulfull voice, check this album out and give it it's second life.
