Product Description

Hal Spacejock was sitting in the Volante’s flight deck, gazing at a satellite image of planet Dismolle on the main viewscreen. The display was centred on a sandy beach, where hoards of sunbathers were stretched out on their towels.
‘Navcom, how do you zoom in again?’ asked Hal.
‘That’s the limit,’ said the ship’s computer, in her neutral female voice.
‘But I can’t see anything!’
‘That’s why it’s the limit.’

A cunning rival determined to ruin Hal's business, a trainee Peace officer facing a dangerous investigation and a planet with more bugs than a new operating system ... When Hal and Clunk set out to make a fresh start, this wasn't exactly what they had in mind.

Now Hal must choose: take on the rival to save his own business, or help the trainee with her first - and possibly last - investigation?

Whatever he decides, it's No Free Lunch for Hal Spacejock!

90,000 words (380 paperback pages). Uses British spelling.

What they’re saying:

"With his gift for satire, science fiction author Simon Haynes is the Australian Terry Pratchett. In evidence I submit "No Free Lunch", a rollicking SciFi showcasing the adventures of that square-jawed, square-shooter spaceman Hal Spacejock" - Midwest Book Review

"A five-star book" - Jim C. Hines

"No Free Lunch" is an effortless read that doesn't take itself too seriously. The plot is fun and intelligent, with some genuine laugh-out loud moments. [...] it is more subtle, and the main character more complex and endearing, than the macho title suggests. Bookseller+Publisher, May 2008.

I cannot fault any of the Hal Spacejock books thus far. They are well written, very funny and very entertaining.

I thought Series 7 & 8 of Red Dwarf was funny but the Hal Spacejock books are a long way ahead.

Yet another amusing and irreverent look at the life of a freight trader. This time with a female involvement, but as usuual not all is what it seems. Light hearted and an easy read - thoroughly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh I do like Hal & Clunk 16 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not a fan of slapstick comedy, and the Hal Spacejock books are mostly that, but the books are well written & the characters well rounded, and it seems to work. I might not laugh out loud very often, but they are smile-your-way-through books for sure. This is just as good a read as the other books in the series, not sure if it would be good as a stand-alone read because I already know the background of Hal & Clunk's lives. Even though it is slapstick, the plots are well-thought out - in fact the plots hold together better than many 'serious' SF books.

No Free Lunch introduces a new character that I hope stays with the team, she fits in well & we have a bit of love-interest for Hal. This story gives a bit of adventure, some thriller-murder-mystery-investigation and, of course, Hal being the hero & saving the day. Good stuff for a more relaxing evening read.
