Let us begin with make few things clear, and then review it ... "Free fall" is not an autobiography, but fiction just like his first book "Siberian Education" . In an interview with a Russian journalist Elena Cherneko he repeatedly emphasized that his book is not autobiographical, but only positioned as such to Western publishers.
Elena even checked with the Russian Ministry of Defence and they had no record of any soldier by the name of Liling or Verzhbitsky who served in Chechnya. He continue to emphasizes that his second book is not about Chechnya ... That's odd, because on my copy the cover clearly states " a sniper's story from CHECHNYA" ...
I guess Nicolai was smart enough to understand that he could make money from writing about organized crime and war in Russia for Western people. But the most genious was to get what the Russians calls "useful idiots" to review his books. This useful newspapers and so called authoritys on crime have their reviews all over his book covers with their praise and reviews, in what they call memoir, true, autobiographical ... One of this famous "idiots" reviews made me buy Nicolais books, and I guess that makes me an idiot as well... First and last time buy book recommended by him. Also his unconditionally praise of Nicolais books makes one wonder just how much of an authorithy on crime he is, and if his books are fiction as well...
As a memoir or first hand account of a sniper... I would not rate this one star. But as fiction it's kinda entertaining and worth 2 stars.
