Book Description

28 Oct 1999
Eight and a half million viewers watched the Are You Being Served? on BBC 1 on Saturday nights when it was rescreened in Spring/Summer 1998, in the silver jubilee year of the series first transmission. Sky Gold is continually re-running episodes and in the US it is one of the most popular cable TV programmes on the West Coast. Are You Being Served? is not only a TV classic it is also a cult. To celebrate the show we are publishing this 'official' celebration book contributed to and endorsed by the writers David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd who have made available original scripts and behind the scenes photographs as well as personal anecdotes. The book reviews the history of programme including how the original idea was developed. There are character and main actor profiles, and first hand interviews with John Inman, Molly Sugden, Trevor Banister, Arthur Brough, Frank Thornton, and Wendy Richard (now a key actress in Eastenders). This is followed by an episode-by-episode guide including a cast-list and original transmission date, features on the secretaries of young Mr Grace who became famous - and who could forget Joanna Lumley?- and quotes and memories from special guests. Finally there will be a special section on the feature film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, You Are Being Served! 28 Jan 2006
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic book about one of Britain's finest sitcoms of all time. It includes the history of how the programme was created, the set designs, the secrets of how they stopped the clothes on display from being pinched by the crew, to synopses of every single episode, a chapter on the AYBS feature film, even a look at the American and Australian versions, and a full section on the AYBS spin-off Grace and Favour.
I can recommend this to all AYBS fans!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! 29 Mar 2012
By D M Jackson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Of all the books I've read on 'Are You Being Served?', this one is the best by far. It is a wonderful read for fans of the show. You would not believe how much information is offered within the pages, not to mention the photographs of Harold Bennett as a child. Ever wanted to know how many times Mrs Slocombe appeared with green hair in the span of the programme? The answer lies within this book. Do you want to know what other programmes Trevor Bannister did before and after 'Are You Being Served?' You'll find out and even see photographs of him as Heavy Breathing on 'The Dustbinmen'.

If you want the real story of 'Are You Being Served?' behind the counter AND behind the scenes, then purchase this book. You will not regret it!
