I remember back in 76 when I was 16 I lived to listen to guitar heroes. Rainbow, Thin Lizzy, Schenker to name but a few were peaking and it was a golden time to be a heavy rock fan. A friend introduced me to a guy called Ted Nugent who apparently was a bit of a nutter, but could play a mean guitar! How right he was! After 30odd years this is still one of my favourite hard rock albums. A then unknown Meat Loaf does guest vocals on several songs, the highlights being Writing on the wall and Hammerdown. Superb and timeless.

I first saw Nugent at Reading '76, then again at Hammersmith '79. This brings home to me again just how amazing the gonzoid guitarist is! Damn, but he's good!

And of course, the bonus on this album is that Meatloaf was his vocalist on it. If you want to hear heavy metal boogie performed by the master of it, listen to this album, and hear him blow all opposition out of the water! God, I wish I were that age again...

Ted's debut is of course an established classic. But Free For All is great too. He has his own really distinctive rock'n'roll style. Dog Eat Dog, Street Rats and Hammerdown are especially tasty. Derek St Holmes was a great singer and Meat Loaf's efforts are my favourite by him.

I thought Ted lost it with Penetrator when he dropped the rock'n'roll and went in search of AOR airplay.

Turn It Up, Turn It Up, Louder and Louder

A cracking follow up to his first album but is certainly not as good but still leaves a lot of bands in its shade.
