A Listenable, Contemporary African Collection 25 April 2011
By Birdman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
After reading the very harsh, one-star review another listener awarded this very listenable collection, I'm at a loss for words. Four discs with beautifully remastered cuts from forerunners and front-runners in African music, circa 1965-1989. The other listener seemed to prefer more traditional selections. That is his right. I know and love traditional African music, too. Had he read the visible set-list on the back of the box, he'd have known what he was buying.

I cannot agree with a one-star review, in mean-spirited language, on an album with masterful cuts by Miriam Makeba, Orchestra Baobab, Salif Keita, Boubacar Traoré, Angélique Kidjo, Vieux Farka Touré, Amadou & Mariam -- and so many others. It is puzzling, indeed, that some customers become so angry and unkind about a project which, at its worst moments, sounds pretty good to me.

As for his use of the term, "c***," I find it amazing amazon allowed the review to appear in the first place.

This is a lovely, ambient album, beautifully remastered from decent sources from Harmonia Mundi Distribution. The value, quality and packaging are all excellent, and I recommend the collection without reservation.

retro and oh so good 12 Feb. 2014

If you want to know more about African music you have to become familiar with the old stuff, and this CD has a lot of that. From the Zaire Rumba sound to the Afro Funk and Rock (and Soukous) sound later on, this is a decent starter compilation for anyone wanting to dive into the vast musical archives of African music.
