Product Description

Review

Who better equipped than Barry Smith to bring together this comprehensive and highly illuminating collection of nearly 400 letters, most of which have not hitherto appeared in print ... illuminating ... This volume of nearly 500 pages, including 13 photos, is a stimulating - if sometimes unsettling - read, well worth the wait. It's certainly a major addition to the Delius/Warlock canon. (John Bishop, Peter Warlock Society Newsletter, no 66, 2000. )

Smith's editing is exemplary. There is just enough introductory matter to set the scene year by year, and Smith disarms criticism and keeps at bay any dull search for misprints by attributing all such to the correspondent's failure to spell properly ... There is much to entertain in the letters, as well as food for thought. (Robert Anderson, Times Literary Supplement )

I feel I must write and tell you how very much I enjoyed your concert last night, though I cannot adequately express in words what intense pleasure it was to me to hear such perfect performances of such perfect music. Read the first page

Well worth the price! 3 July 2002
Format:Hardcover
This book is a "must" in every Delian's library. Written in the same way like Lionel Carley's incredible "Frederick Delius. A life in letters". Mr. Smith writes a very informative introduction and then lists the letters chronologically, year by year. Each letter is painstakingly researched, leaving no question whatsoever unanswered. For a person not only interested in Delius as a person, but even more so in his music, this book is a treasure. One can find an incredible measure of practical details, since Peter Warlock transcribed and worked on so many of Delius' pieces. Some information in the letters is a real eye-opener for the professional musician and performer. First class in every respect!!
