Book Description

1 May 2009
Painter and sculptor Frederic, Lord Leighton is one of the foremost artists of the Victorian classical school. His masterpieces featuring mythological subjects are thought to be the inspiration behind the nineteenth-century fascination of the Greek world. This monograph includes more than one hundred beautiful reproductions of Leighton's work along with an exploration of the role that classicism played in his paintings. In addition to his art, the book examines the architectural wonders of Leighton House, the artist's opulent Victorian residence in London.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointment 6 May 2010
I' m afraid it was a terrible shock to me when I opened the parcel and I saw the book I was waiting with such un high interest - the book has no quality, I' ve never seen un art book so mediocre.
As it is well known, in un art book photos and the overall presentation are essencial. That's the reason why the best photographers also work on this field.
Even popular editions (edited by Tashen, for instance) have extremely high quality editing, paper quality and photos.
In this case the paper is horrible, the photos of very poor quality and the global presentation is terrible.
It is really sad - Frederic Leighton is one of my favourite painters.

5.0 out of 5 stars a fantastic collection of leighton works 25 Aug 2010
By working artist - Published on
I found this book to be a fantastic collection of Leighton's work to date. I refer to the book often for inspiration as the color plates are numerous and well detailed. The price is also fantastic as I would expect to pay closer to $50 for such a book. The book also contains a lot of highly detailed drawings that are superb!

2.0 out of 5 stars The printing colors were inaccurate, I almost sent it back 9 Mar 2010

Do not advise for the true Art Lover, especially if you know the palette of colors it was painted in. Flaming June has a creme color sky, not blue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book, beautifully illustrated. 20 May 2011

This book is actually a catalog, is was released for the re opening of Leighton's house museum. It has alot of information on his life, his education, painting philosophy and inspiration. The photos of the restored house are amazing are beautiful. About the cover piece, well I can talk about that, I am a docent guide in The Museo de Arte De Ponce, Flaming June's home since 1962. The other reviewer is correct, the cover picture looks strange, not only is the sky not blue(actually is like a light lilac beige hue)but the orange of the dress is wrong, the color in the actual painting is far richer, it has many, many variations and tones, is that precisely what makes it so special. The should have used a better more detailed image.

3.0 out of 5 stars small plate sizes 8 Mar 2012
By Nick - Published on
I found this book a bit disappointing. It contains a good amount of information but the painting photos appear small in many cases. A good amount of full pages are given to drawings. While this is nice I would have liked to see more of the same done with the paintings.

the book has a great variety of photos and including one of a mr.leighton working in his studio but some of the color images are more than bad, any painter would see this.
