This book is perfect for children from about 12 to 42 months. If you're not already familiar with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's books, they're great for children from about a year old. Great stories, beautifully illustrated, and usually with a message that kids can begin to relate to when they grow up a little. Although this book is Axel Scheffler's own work, the style is very similar.

The story is a simple one about how Freddy the Frog loves to play in the pond with his friends. The novelty is that it's a well-put-together waterproof plastic book. Looks like it'll probably last fairly well, and it's very buoyant, so no danger of losing it under the bubbles! It also has a squeaker on the front cover, which, while a little incongruous, keeps little ones entertained too.

My nearly-3-year-old girl loves the Donaldson and Scheffler books, but is probably nearing the end of being entertained by this book. Think it'll be great for younger children though.

`Freddy the Frog' with Axel Scheffler's illustrations is by far the nicest bath book we have come across as new parents. It is printed to a much higher level of detail than the handful of other bath books we already own and has a nice little squeaker that my 20-month-old daughter has no difficulty in using. The text for the story is written on the adjacent page to the main illustration which allowed the (un-credited... is it Scheffler?) writer to come up with a sweet little rhyming tale - simple but nice to read aloud. The illustrations are terrific in my opinion. I can see that they might not be to all tastes, but there's a kind of happy mayhem in the images with plenty of fine detail to stimulate a small child and good to play finding games in the scene.

A few minor points make this less than perfect; the squeaker only works well from the front page so my daughter wants to close the book midway. The pond scene of the illustrations is repeated on every picture page and could have been more varied (although it does go from day to night!) Finally, some of the added characters are of a decidedly unusual variety compared with most children's books for this age group so, while you might delight in showing your child moorhens, kingfishers and (?) water rats their names are not given in the text and they're not the easiest things for a child to learn compared with the usual duck, fish etc. That might be a selling point if you've had enough of the same recycled characters - but it could also put you off.

Overall I enjoy reading this book with my daughter who is at about the right age for something like this... She loves it and has learned to say Frog in honour of Freddy... so that can't be bad!

Great product this - waterproof book with velcro fastener and a squeaker, my 8 month old son loves playing with it as well as having it read to him. Durable, brightly coloured and well written, overall very highly recommended.

Okay, I might be the only one, but when I saw this I was thinking to myself "what's a bath book"? And, it seems, a bath book is just like any other childrens' book except that it's made of plastic and has a squeaker. Genius! Honestly, why aren't all children's book made like this? The strong plastic will survive not only bath time but also stands up to all the bending, twisting and pulling a small child might reasonably be expected to put it through. And as for food stains, forget it, this book can take it. So, in summary, bath books are the way forward as far as I'm concerned!

As for this particular title, well, it's a pretty formulaic tale - which is by no means a criticism since people have spent a lot of time and money working out the best formula for a child's story - with some great pictures to accompany it. The image of Freddy and his friends having a race is my favourite!

All in all, I'd recommend this. As far as I'm concerned, you can't have too many childrens' books anyway, plus this has the all the bonuses listed above. Recommended!

This is a really nicely presented and good quality bath book; the pages look very strong and durable, good quality print and beautiful illustrations.

Compared to other bath books I have had for my baby the content was also more substantial, with 4 rhyming lines per page. Other bath books I have just include one word or sentence per page, so I found this one more suited to a slightly older baby. My son (15 months) was not that interested and it didn't grab his concentration, so I wonder if it would be better for 18 months +. I still give it 4* because it is a nicer than average bath book and hopefully he will grow into it.

The way the rhyme was written really reminded me of another book we have, Dino-Mites: A Ticklish Tail, although its by a different author I found it to be in the same style.

The other good point is that the squeaker worked well, with a strong squeaking sound; I have found some other bath books with squeakers to be a little weak, either not working properly or not squeaking loudly enough.

I saved this for my nearly two year old son's bathtimes during a week long holiday in a rented cottage and it proved to be a nice little surprise for him. The waterproof design works well and he enjoyed turning the pages as I read the story to him (whilst washing his hair etc) and it was a good distraction for a few nights. The story is amusing and the drawings up to the usual high Axel Sheffler standard. There's a squeaker built into the cover which adds an additional point of interest. After 3 or 4 nights the book's appeal lessened when compared to boats, ducks and the usual bathtime paraphernalia, but I am sure many children would like this book and it is a useful addition to the bathtime distraction armoury. Only two slight negatives - not sure how long the plastic cover would last with a lot of use, it might tear at some point; and the book tends to trap pockets of water between the pages so that when you open it the next day, or pick it up to move it, it suddenly soaks you with a splattering of cold water.
