Fred Keenor, captain and talisman of Cardiff City and Wales during the 1920s, was the original football hard man. He had an unparalleled reputation for delivering violent, juggernaut challenges on the stars of the day such as Dixie Dean and Alex James; however, he was also regarded as being one of the country's great defenders by fans, players and critics alike. Not only does he remain the captain of the first - and only - team from outside England to win the FA Cup, but he also came within 0.024 of goal difference from winning the First Division title and captained his country to three home international victory shields. Perhaps the pinnacle of his international career came in a game against Scotland which was christened 'Keenor and the Unknowns', such were his awe-inspiring efforts to motivate and inspire his team. All these achievements came in spite of the fact that he was wounded while fighting in World War One, and it was felt that he would never be able to play the game again. His fight back to full fitness from his war wounds was matched by his fighting spirit throughout his football career.
About the Author
James Leighton is a qualified lawyer and football fanatic from Cardiff. He has been going to Cardiff City games since 1986 when, as a five-year-old boy, his father took him to watch the Bluebirds defeat local rivals Newport County 5-1. While in subsequent games James would learn that the Bluebirds were not Real Madrid, he had the football bug and loved witnessing the highs and lows of his team. His love of football also means that James is a keen participant in the sport. He has played football at a semi-professional level for clubs in both the English and Welsh football pyramid but is still mystified as to why he has never been selected for Welsh international duty. As well as being kept busy writing sports books, James is also the managing director of the legal marketing company, Legal Media, which provides marketing services to law firms. I loved this book,very well written and really caught the way of life of a footballer in the 1920's.Fred Keenor himself was a real determined character and a very good player but the bit that caught my imagination was the passages referring to a prolific goalscorer from Scotland,who actually scored the only goal of the F.A. Cup of 1927 - Hugh Ferguson.Cardiff City bought him from Motherwell and he scored loads of goals for both teams,Cardiff then sold him ( because of a financial crisis) to,my team,Dundee F.C. which proved to be a tragic move for Hugh.The whole book kept me interested all the way through and has been the best football biography i've read. Can't praise this book high enough !Highly recommended !!
