As other reviewers have mentioned this DVD does not contain the familiar footage from the BBC documentary series. This was filmed and produced by an independent film maker, according to the visual clues, in 1992. Fred would have been about 53 then, still a fit and relatively youthful, and his inimitable personality really shines.
There is a noticeable difference in the production values when compared to the BBC material, which is to be expected considering the lesser budget. That said this doesn't detract too much since the subject matter speaks for itself and it's often refreshing to watch things flow at a more leisurely pace. There's no narration as such except for Fred's own narrative explaining what he is doing in his own unique style. He seems to be at ease and enjoying making the film. The highlight for me was watching how he fixed his ladders on a big chimney, something I'd long wondered about. Seeing him perched knee over the top rung of his ladder at what must be well over 100 feet up with no safety gear, hammering in pegs, makes me in awe even more than ever.
Despite the running time being stated as 54 minutes, it actually plays for around 75 minutes. There are no extras, no menu even - it simply plays when it is loaded. A really good watch, and a fitting tribute to a true working class hero, the likes of which we will sadly never see again.
