Product Description

Beloved steeplejack, industrial historian and a man with a passion for steam, the late Fred Dibnah's enthusiasms proved contagious to all who came across them. This collection brings together for the first time ever, previously unseen footage shot for the BBC with Fred at Britain's railway workshops, museums and preservation lines. These are the programmes Fred would have made, accompanying the viewer on the journeys of a lifetime, sharing a world of knowledge and excitement, offering an opportunity to see much that has never been screened before. FRED DIBNAH'S RAILWAY COLLECTION on 3 discs features The Story of Britain's Railways; Great Little Steam Railways; and Made in Britain: Railway Yards and Workshops, taking one from the earliest wood wagon ways in the 18th century to the last great days of steam and the birth of the railways preservation movement. Locations include the National Railway Museum; the Bluebell Railway; Didcot Railway Centre; Birmingham Railway Museum; Llangollen, Middleton, Ravenglass and Eskdale, South Tynedale, Tanfield and East Lancs Railways; the Bo ness and Kinneil Railway; Midland Railway Centre; Great Central Railway; Severn Valley Railway and Ffestiniog Railway. Featuring over six hours of never released footage along with classic archive footage from his series, this is a must-have for fans of Fred Dibnah and anyone with an interest in the inspiring story of Britain's Railway history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great. 14 Mar 2009
Verified Purchase
When i first saw this on the internet i was really unsure whether to buy it. I had yet to see anyone review it that gave details as to how recent the footage was. I also didnt know what to expect as i dont have any other Fred Dibnah dvds/videos.
First of all i must say any railway or fred dibnah fan should own this dvd set. Each dvd is round about 2 and a half hours long, which is near enough 7 and a half hours long in total. Each programme gives a fantastic look at many preserved railways around the country.
Many cab rides on various steam locos are featured plus the history of the railways. Also one of the dvds focus's mainly on engine sheds, and features tours explaining what is going on in the various workshops, with fred making his way to each railway with one of his traction engines.
The footage is professionally filmed to a very high standard, and was filmed probably in the early 2000's till about 2005.
There were one or two slight errors in the programmes, such as when Fred was explaining about Mallard's speed record and saying she acheived it in 1926, when infact it was 1938!
But all in all, im glad i purchased this box set, and im sure i will watch it again and again in years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fred Dibnah's Railway Collection 31 May 2009
Fred Dibnah's Railway Collection is an excellent buy and a must for Railway enthusiasts young and old alike and the enthusiasm that Fred puts into his commentary gets very infectious. Especially for the older generation like myself it brings back fond memories of the times spent around the railways and leaning over bridges getting the engine numbers and names. For the younger people it is an interesting insight to an age gone by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series 3 Nov 2008
By PS
This is an excellent series and great value for money. Just as it says in the description these are the programmes that Fred would have wanted to make had he not been constrained by the half hour broadcast slots. Thoroughly enjoyed them.
