Product Description

Product Description

Freckles (1904) by Gene Stratton Porter is the uplifting story of a plucky waif without a name and without one hand, disabled since infancy. Raised in a Chicago orphanage, he survives abuse and harsh circumstances and grows up a brave, loyal, and hardworking young man with a true capacity for self-sacrifice.

Freckles becomes a timber guard in the Limberlost swamp in Indiana and exhibits extraordinary courage and resourcefulness on the job. He also falls in love with the Swamp Angel, a young girl whose beauty and kindness bring out the best in others.

A beloved turn-of-the-century Indiana classic for all ages.

My father was born in 1906, in 1910 his father died, and he was sent to be raised by an Aunt and Uncle. While he was there he was horribly injured, and never returned home. He found and read "Freckles" during this exile, and felt very strong empathy for this loney young man, raised separate from his birth family, maimed ,and sure no woman would ever love him, as he was. He learned many of the important lessons of life from this classic book, honesty, perserverence, hard work and most of all, that there is a wonderful woman waiting somewhere that would judge him, not by his scarred body, but by what is in his heart. It was always his favorite, as it shall always be mine.

The five stars are for the content - this is an old-fashioned book, and has some interesting ideas about heredity (Freckles has a refined singing voice because his mother was a trained singer and somehomw the training came down through the genes!) but is inspiring and touching. The sequel, A Girl of the Limberlost, is better written but not as engaging: Elnora is no Freckles or Swamp Angel.

But why on Earth is this book so expensive? Can't this be made accessible to people with a normal budget?!

I first read this book when I was about 10 years old, and have read it many times since. It is frankly romantic, a story of pluck and determination, a tribute to all the virtues that are seldom held up as valuable today. All of the characters are well wrought, but it is Freckles himself, with his fine character and his self doubts that so intrigued me. To this day, I am drawn to red haired men...as a result of reading Freckles in my formative youth!.
