Check out Freak Out!,
By
This review is from: Freak Out [DVD] (DVD)
I respect anyone who teams up with their mates and makes something so insane with such a low budget! It reminded me a lot of the movies me and my mates would make when we were younger and after seeing it, it really made me want to start doing that again.
It's humour is blatantly aimed at student horror fans so I can see why some people might find it too random but personally I found it got funnier and funnier as I watched it. Some stuff didn't hit the mark for me but it kept me watching and laughing until the end. There's some nice homages to classic horror movies and the budget production values give it some charm. There's some wicked gore in there too. If you're familiar with the horror genre and you're looking for something different you should definately check this title out. Hopefully it might open some doors and allow some new-blood directors with talent to get some exposure too. Well done Anchor Bay for releasing this little gem!

Shaun Of The Dead Next Door,
By Vincent Voorhees "Peace & Chainsaws." (Southsea, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Freak Out [DVD] (DVD)
Slasher flick obsessed teenager Merv Doody thinks all his Black Christmases have come at once when a deranged killer turns up in his... er... shower, but this camp, flouncey, vegetarian, Dallas loving, incompetent, potato sack-clad loony is closer to Freddie Mercury than Freddy Krueger.
Merv takes it upon himself to use all his knowledge of slash and gore flicks to induct this wannabe maniac into the Fango family hall of fame. Together with the staple wacky best mate, Onkey (think Corey Feldman in Lost Boys or Stiles in Teen Wolf), Merv transforms The Looney into a deranged chainsaw waving, axe wielding, spatula happy psycho. But when the blood starts to fly Merv begins to realise maybe training an escaped mental patient to be a serial killer wasn't such a good idea after all. As they say on all half arsed film covers - with hilarious results! Freak Out is a comedy first, horror second, paying loving tribute to the High School teen comedies of the 80s and just about every horror movie you can think of (with laugh out loud references to Salem's Lot, Child's Play, Blair Witch and The Evil Dead), it's a mad hybrid of Weekend at Bernie's, C.H.U.D 2: Bud The Chud, Friday the 13th, Teen Wolf, Nightmare On Elm Street, Scream, Halloween and Good Burger. Shot on a shoestring budget over a period of time it took the Wayans brothers to pollute the earth with 4 Scary Movies, this cheap and nasty laugh riot has more jokes in 5 minutes than every Wayans film put together. Even Blankman. Yes, even Blankman. Where Shaun of the Dead was Love Actually directed by George A. Romero, Freak Out is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre directed by John Hughes. If you love horror, you'll love this. If you want a British comedy that breaks the mould by actually being funny, you'll love this. And if you want to see decapitation, zombies, alcoholism, chainsaws, gore, gratuitous shower scenes, vampire lesbians, action, adventure and a dog with a bow on it's head... well... you need help. But you also need Freak Out! "That party in my pants? Someone spilt the drinks"

Absolute college comedy gold! From the minds typical of students, but outrageously funny stuff. Any student could make this with enough motivation/help/time, and these guys just went ahead and did it!
A must see for anyone that is or has been a student at college or university level, loves horror films and/or spoofs, or both! Luvvit :D
