When it comes to low budget horror movies, they can be very hit and miss. So what a pleasent suprise this film turned out to be.
An 8 year old boy kills his mother and is sent to a psychiatric hospital, he then spends the next 13 years locked away where he never says a word. Now just as his sister has reached adulthood, he escapes the hospital and goes on a killing spree.
If this sounds familiar, it should, because it basically follows the same story as John Carpenter's Halloween. Frayed is actually more ambitious than Halloween in terms of twists and turns, and this is both a blessing and a curse. I guessed the twist coming very early on, but allowing myself to feel smug, I was then very surprised when I was hit with further twists that I never even thought about.
This was a diamond in the low budget rough that makes a mockery of it's budget, good directing from first timers Norbert Caoili and Rob Portmann, the acting was far better than i was expecting, the effects are convincing, the camerawork, music and editing all seemed very professional. The teenage girls were very attractive and there were some effective scares that didn't feel too forced. There's a scene near the beginning of the movie that definitely isn't for the squeamish, but it doesn't feel gratuitous.
If Frayed was made in 1977 instead of 2007, this may be considered a classic today. Frayed doesn't really add anything new to the genre, but in my opinion it's a very welcome addition.
