Product Description

Devastated by the loss of his adored wife Edie after 31 years of marriage Fraser Coleman now learns the painful truth that she was not as perfect as he believed her to be. You will be swept along by this compelling account of the revelations he faces involving not only his wife and the lives of his two daughters, but also the surprising identity of the father he lost when he was only five. His beloved mother Marjorie, now 91, frail, and battling to continue living independently, kept from Fraser and his sister Margaret the truth concerning their father's background, and how he died. In so doing she believed she was acting in her children's best interests, but now she regrets it, and wants to share all the details with them before it is too late. Fraser's older daughter, Sarah, who lives with her husband Michael, and their six-year-old twins, Kate and George, juggles the demands of her business and domestic life, trying to deal with the many pressures, which are often of her own making. His younger daughter, Joanna, a drop-out from university, and still undecided about about a career, has uncovered for herself unpalatable facts about her mother which have induced in her a cynical approach to life. Fraser, who has always taken the 'line of least resistance' is shocked by the new insights he gains into the complexity of human nature, but finds support and inspiration from his new friend Angela. As the twists and turns of the story unfold, and young George's life hangs in the balance, the reader will not be able to put the book down until all the skeletons have come out of the cupboard, the branches of the family tree have been strengthened, and the satisfying conclusion has been reached.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great first novel, 20 Nov 2009
By
This review is from: Fraser's Line (Paperback)
I found this book highly absorbing from the first page, wandering what could possibly happen next. There is a strong story line and the characters and family relationships are totally believable. The lives of the various characters and their interaction is highly realistic and I had difficulty putting it down. The book is beautifully written and I can't wait for this Author's next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars An engaging story about roots and family relationships - Review from The BookBag, 24 Aug 2009

This review is from: Fraser's Line (Paperback)
When Edie died Fraser was devasted. They'd been married for thirty one years and he'd been devoted to her. Nothing had been too much trouble and he'd been quite prepared to watch her flirt with other men, to shine in any company. He was, after all, the man she went home with. Her death had come suddenly and weeks later he was still in a state of shock, but he knew he would have to sort out her affairs. He was in for some painful shocks.
This story about people's roots and how backgrounds can affect lives even generations down the line is an enjoyable holiday read. The story is well told without wasted words and the plot is neatly built with writing which is confident and a delight to read. I found the granchildren endearing. At six years old the twins are worlds apart with Kate showing all the signs of making a good mother hen and George playing the scamp. I'd love to have seen more of them!
It's Angela Gabriel (a neat play on names, there) who helps Fraser not just come to terms with Edie's death, but to accept her for what she really was. In the end it's a dreadful accident which forces the whole family to assess their priorities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, 9 Jun 2009
This review is from: Fraser's Line (Paperback)
Totally engaging with its strong story line and believable characters. The many twists and turns had me totally absorbed, as did the family relationships. I became deeply involved with the dilemmas faced by Fraser and his daughters, particularly during the final crisis which drew them together. I was held in suspense right through to the end. It was beautifully written and I loved it. The pace was good and the writing interspersed with humour, particularly where the children are concerned. Desciptions were natural and vivid and the unexpected is always happening. I thoroughly recommend this first novel by Monica Carly.
