If you don't already know "The Maid of the Mountains",and as it hasn't been performed in the West End since 1972,it's quite possible you won't.
Just as "The Geisha" (also on the helios label) owes much to G&S,so The Maid owes a great debt to Lehar. This is not strange as The Maid wad first seen in 1917 at Daly's Theatre,10 years after The Merry Widow had it's UK premiere there.
Like a lot of musical comedies of the time the plot is a mere whimsy, but don't let that put you off;the music is really fine, and on this recording is sung and played with wit, panache & sincerity, and not hammed up at all.
With a cast that includes Janis Kelly, Christopher Maltman,Sally Burgess,Michael George,Richard Suart & Donald Maxwell.
The New London Light Opera Chorus & New London Orchestra conducted by Ronald Corp bring this long lost and neglected romantic masterpiece back to life.
If you like musical comedy of the late 19th & early 20th century you cannot go wrong with this.
PS:~This disc runs to nearly 80 minutes! thus giving you even more enjoyment.

GENTLE BEGUILEMENT 28 Aug 2011
By Mr. D. L. Rees TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
A 2000 recording of the musical that helped revive spirits in the First World War. Janis Kelly heads an appealing cast as Teresa - she the Maid of the Mountains in love with Baldassare, leader of a gang of rogues.

Throughout there is much to please (with more than just a hint of Lehar). There are mild reminders too of Gilbert and Sullivan as the General and brigand Tonio reveal more about themselves. (Richard Suart is fun as Tonio. Years ago he faked his own death and now regrets it, his wife having become very rich.)

Although basically a love story, there is that humour - irony too. Note "Save Us", the crowd begging its new governor to capture the local villain - unaware they are addressing Baldassare in disguise. Other highlights include "Dividing the Spoil", "Dirty Work", "A Bachelor Gay" (which meant something different then) and the lilting "Love Will Find a Way" (this is where Lehar is so evident).

Original audiences will no doubt have wined and dined beforehand. This delightful new recording will be appreciated all the more when in a similar state of well being. Forget about now. Transport yourself back in time. The show beguiled then. For those in the right frame of mind, it does still.

Few will chance on this accidently but if, like me, you enjoy the genre, you will find it an enjoyable performance with several old favourites.
