... thus spake the great composer Bernard Herrmann, and who could disagree with him?

I have always treasured the music that Franz Waxman wrote for Taras Bulba, having purchased the 'soundtrack' LP (apparently re-recorded) when it first came out many years ago. It is a pity that the film did not do justice to the music!!! More recently there have been other recordings of various parts of the score, but never before the complete work, together with several pieces not used in the film. Some of these are, in my opinion, little more than 'interesting', but the Ride of the Cossacks, arranged for two pianos/six hands, is terrific - something Liszt would have loved! Also included in these extras are three movements from the Concert Suite that the composer put together, and are great to have.

Tadlow Music has been doing us proud, but I really feel that this two CD recording is their best yet. Both sound and performance are top notch, and I've never heard that wonderful piece The Ride of the Cossacks (what a wonderful proms number it would be!) performed with such panache - the orchestra seem to have been swept up in the excitement!

"The score of a lifetime," was what Bernard Herrmann had said 11 Dec. 2011
By Lou B. - Published on Amazon.com

of fellow composer Franz Waxman's magnificent music score for the 1962 film of Nikolai Gogol's "Taras Bulba." And Herrmann may very well be right in his assessment of Waxman's enormous contribution for this film and it is difficult for me to pick one Waxman score as his all time greatest anymore than I could choose one Goldsmith or Rozsa score as their all time best.
But this may be his pinnacle work as "Spartacus" was for Alex North. Waxman was
at the height of his creative chops when he composed this music and one could definitely hear the influences of such Russian composers as Prokofiev and, in particular, Shostakovich. Much of his score is based on actual Russian folk music and he has done a spectacular job of immersing himself in the world of Russian music. The score has a vigor and epic sweep that ranks it with the best
music ever written for the cinema and I consider it one of the greatest film scores ever written.
On the strength of the other four Waxman scores I own I purchased this spectacular recording without ever having seen the film or even hearing the original soundtrack album of 1962 because if it had Waxman's name attached to it
then I knew it must be good. But I understated that estimation: this music is magnificent!
This 2 disc set features the complete score in all its dynamic orchestral glory
and painstakingly reconstructed by its conductor Nic Raine (who also did the same function on the "El Cid" recording a few years ago) who leads the City of Prague Philharmonic in an exhilarating performance of this difficult music. There are many highlights in this score and, of course, "The Ride to Dubno" track is definitely one of those. I can't really get too in depth about the music as I haven't seen the film-----yet-----but I can say as a lover of great music that this is some of the best music I have heard anywhere.
I don't think Waxman has ever written a bad score and he was the most progressive of his European contempoaries and one can only wonder what scores he would have given us had he lived another twenty years. he definitely would have given John Williams a good run for his money and he was a more original talent than Williams in terms of film music composition.
"Taras Bulba" gets my highest rating and I hope there will be more new recordings forthcoming of this great composer's works. "The Spirit of St. Louis" would be a good choice I think.
Another great score recorded and presented the way it should have been: complete!

A super sonic recording 5 Dec. 2012
By Steve Perry - Published on Amazon.com

I strongly agree with Lou B about this recording. I love Bernard Herrmann and for him to say that Franz Waxman's Taras Bulba was the greatest soundtrack ever, well that was truly saying something because Bennie pretty much trashed every other soundtrack composer - he felt he was the best, period. (That was just the way he was, kind of rubbed a lot of people the wrong way). Anyway, the playing is fantastic, the recording is super dimensional and it's, well it's a no brainer - this is one of those recordings to die for...... especially if you have a tube amp and really nice speakers this recording SINGS!

Most Enjoyable 16 Mar. 2013

I have never seen the movie "Taras Bulba," but I had always heard that Waxman's score for it was superb. This 2 CD set bears that out. It gives the music from the film, songs that were written for the film and not used, and an electrifying six-hand rendition of "The Ride to Dubno," the most famous part of the score.

I enjoy this CD collection enormously and play it on long drives.

Another fabulous Franz Waxman score 24 Feb. 2013
By Vinyl Bill - Published on Amazon.com

Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a splendid job in transmitting the excitement of this score. The excerpt titled "The Ride from Dubna" is very well known from the RCA recording of the 1970s. I ran Taras Bulba as a projectionist in Detroit in the 1960s. The only good thing about the film was the Waxman score; since I heard this music again and again in the booth, it burned its way into my brain, especially the "Ride" episode. This disc does a wonderful job of recreating the energy and sweep of the original. I dare you not to like this score.
