The Franklin LM6000b is a stand alone spelling checker/finder that will find a word from misspellings or phonetic attempts at a word. It also seems to be a dictionary and Thesaurus etc., but was bought to help with my teenage daughter's terrible grasp of spelling. She is of special educational needs, likes things 'simple', and not very computer/gadget orientated. It was bought on recommendation from her school because she was known to get on with it. It therefore says something very positive for the machine that she genuinely does get on with it so well. However, the short while I tried it I noticed that the spellings were of American English, not UK English, and I could find no way to change this. I asked her what the school had done about this, and she said the ones at school were the same. I am still in correspondence with the school about this. This worry is nothing to do with any prejudice, simply that it will be extra confusing if it teaches her to spell in a manner not acceptable to her examiners. I do not known the answer to this, or even if it is possible to change it.
