have had other franklin dictionaries but this is hard to use for the average person who may be like me getting on in years, it's also very slow compared to other dictionary's don't like it at all and is quite pricey

More than a dictionary and crossword helper.
Still going through the user manual -but so far, very impressed.

Pronounces words as well as providing meanings and also gives histories (like Wikipedia).

My Sharp electronic dictionary is better than the Franklin for the following reasons.

The Sharp has the on/off button on the main typing pad which is easier to get at than the Franklin which is awkwardly placed on the side and not too easy to use.

The Sharp uses only One AA battery - the Franklin has Two (not a big issue)

The Sharp switches on immediately but the Franklin takes a few seconds ( don't like)
The auto switch off time set to max is only 5 minutes. Would benefit from a longer time.

Some words on my Sharp don't come up on the Franklin. This is a bit strange!!

For general use I would recommend the Sharp over the Franklin.

A very useful and comprehensive word machine. I was surprised by it's capabilities and it is just what I wanted.

If you are going for something of this price range, go for the Seiko - comparable weight, twice the screen area, big keyboard, instant switch-on, more comprehensive and easier to get around. The Franklin, though, has a five-language translator, fairly OK digital pronounciation of English words, and will fit a slightly smaller pocket. Each has its own interesting range of facilities, and is good value at the price.
