HASH(0x951abd8c) out of 5 stars LP Packaging = weak. 2 Nov. 2012
By Frank E. Pearn Jr. - Published on
Format: Vinyl Verified Purchase
Hard to believe in 2012 that the packaging for a double LP, soundtrack to a Disney Movie, associated with a Tim Burton film would be poorly packaged.

Remember the Disney records that used to have great books in them that told the story to the movie.

Well you get none.
No booklet, no liner notes, no photos, no color vinyl.
Not even a gatefold sleeve (and this is a double album).
Not even a digital download card.

For amazon's first vinyl exclusive, the boat was completely missed. Sunk.

Part of the allure of vinyl for me is the package. The color vinyl, gatefold double album, the opportunity to make it a package. Stickers, posters, lyric sheet... Something to enjoy more than just downloading a song or attempting to read the tiny print on a CD book.

Sure, I enjoy dropping the needle on this. But really? White inner sleeves? You couldn't even print up scenes from the movie on the inner record sleeve or made a collage of the artists performing the tracks?

$34.98? Really.

Very disgusted.

HASH(0x978b2528) out of 5 stars FUN and get the Target edition...2 cool bonuses... 5 Oct. 2012
By Larry Davis - Published on
Format: Audio CD
Two bonus songs by The Pretty Reckless (Gossip Girl's Taylor Mumsen's Runaways-esque band)...the rocking original "Only You" and the new (to me) band The Veils with the cool catchy modern rocker "Another Night On Earth".

On top of that is a compilation (not a soundtrack, like the companion "Alice In Wonderland" disc was...but this is MUCH better)...too many bands/artists I dig and collect that I could not pass this up!! Karen O's warped Hawaiian-esque "Strange Love" (nice), Neon Trees' cool catchy "Electric Heart (Stay Forever)", Foster The People's Mark Foster with "Polartropic (You Don't Understand Me)" and not unlike his great catchy band, Passion Pit's new wavey "Almost There", Plain White T's great Ramones cover of "Pet Sematary" (could there be a more apt cover song??), Kimbra's new "With My Hands" (Bjork meets soul and not unlike her debut album "Vows"), AWOLNATION's modern rocker "Everybody's Got A Secret"...

...Now here's the surprise...

Kerli's own version of "I Feel Immortal" (just titled "Immortal" on the disc), which she cowrote with ex-Nightwish singer Tarja Turunen, and on the import versions of Tarja's 2nd (3rd if you count a Finnish-sung Christmas disc) solo post-Nightwish album "What Lies Beneath" this version why Tarja's version is not on the US version of the record?? It's similarly-styled female-fronted Euro powermetal, which is a new direction for Estonian artist Kerli, as she did goth-flavoured dance tracks...and it works!! Both versions are great, but I wonder why Tarja's name is taken off the writers' credits??!!??!! NOT FAIR!!

On we go...

Next up...another surprise, the collaboration "My Mechanical Friend" by Grace Potter and the Flaming Lips!!! Is this one of their "Heady Fwends" collaborations that didn't make their recent album?? Or did they save it for this record?? works GREAT and shows the diversity of Grace the Lips, Grace shows no bounds and I'm more of a fan now.

Next up..."Lost Cause" by Imagine Dragons...pretty cool and this Las Vegas band is really growing on me, with this and their recent singles...I may get their album "Night Visions" after all...then fun LA "Tongue Tied" band Grouplove with "Underground" tune...then Holly Brook (oops sorry...SKYLAR GRAY) with "Building A Monster"...shows her building on her debut album via Linkin Park's label, and her post-Eminem/other rappers collaborations...still waiting on album #2 Holly/Skylar...and this song is from 2011 according to the credits, so she has stuff in the can that Interscope is sitting on it seems...c'mon Jimmy, unlesh this "Monster"!! Then a new spooky cover of 1950s standard "Witchcraft" by the Cure's Robert, is there a more apt presence on this record, besides Oingo Boingo genius/Tim Burton sidekick Danny Elfman?? BTW, Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry covered this song as well on one of his covers albums, I believe "Taxi". Then ending the main program..."Praise Be New Holland" by actress Winona Ryder (who dated numerous alt-rockers in the 90s and I actually met her in 1996 at a Posies gig in NYC backstage...our pic is on my Facebook page BTW)...anyhoo, this short track is "sung" in a childlike voice that is both cool and spooky.

Then the 2 bonus tracks, as described above...this is a cool, fun disc that holds together like a great mixtape (remember those??), nice sequence, nothing the 90s but its feel transcribed with current 2012 bands. And the movie looks like a lot of fun too, in the vein of "Corpse Bride"...Tim Burton is a genius, no doubt.

HASH(0xa4b719a8) out of 5 stars A soundtrack that's not just for your kids 27 Sept. 2012
By Kristin - Published on
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
The Frankenweenie soundtrack is an interesting rock and throwback adult album. The standout track is Karen O's "Strange Love" with a catchy chorus and Hawaiian tones. Winona Ryder's childlike voice in "Praise Be New Holland" is a funny, quirky addition. Robert Smith's "Witchcraft" sounds like a drunk, lilting ode to a lover which could be taken in a good way or a bad way. The Neon Trees' "Electric Heart" sounds like it was taken right out of The Strokes' playbook. "My Mechanical Friend" by Grace Potter with the Flaming Lips is just as noteworthy as "Strange Love." Potter and the Flaming Lips have perfectly complementing voices that result in the song being stuck in your head long after you've heard it. The other songs on the album are typical modern rock and indie selections. As I listened to the soundtrack I couldn't wrap my head around how most of these songs would appeal to children. Frankenweenie has a more progressive compilation than other children's movies and is more likely to fit the tastes of teenagers than kids. If you're on the fence about buying the whole album, at the very least buy the Karen O and Grace Potter tracks.

HASH(0x95cf5678) out of 5 stars Grown-up fun!! 30 Sept. 2012
By Nse Ette - Published on
Format: Audio CD
"Frankenweenie Unleashed!" is the soundtrack to the upcoming Tim Burton movie of the same name. It is a Disney animated movie, but apart from the brief hymnal cartoonish Winona Ryder song "Praise Be New Holland" (performed as Ryder's character in the movie), the music sounds pretty grown up.

Karen O performs the lilting Calypso-ish "Strange Love" (with haunting theremin flourishes). Neon Trees perform the razor sharp rocker "Electric Heart (Stay Forever)", while Mark Foster performs the galloping "Polartropic (You Don't Understand Me)" (with lovely cascading piano sounds). "Almost There" is a catchy synth-driven number by Passion Pit with tiny chiming bells and percolating beats. "Pet Sematary" is shimmery Rock by Plain White T's, while Kimbra performs the minimalist percussion-driven chant "With My Hands".

"Everybody;s Got A Secret" by AWOLNATION starts off a Beatles-style piano ballad before guitars and percussion kick in. "Immortal" by Kerli is a rock ballad Evanescence-style. The spectacular "My Mechanical Friends" is quivery Alt Rock by Grace Potter with The Flaming Lips providing ELO-style harmonies, and is followed by another highlight, the brilliant "Lost Cause" by Imagine Dragons.

Grouplove perform the haunting ballad "Underground", Skylar Grey performs the ballad "Building A Monster", while The Cure's Robert Smith does a woozy slowed-down cover of Frank Sinatra's "Witchcraft". Quirky but fun, as is the whole soundtrack.

HASH(0x951af39c) out of 5 stars Better then expected 29 Oct. 2012
By Anikin - Published on

I bought this for my 5 year old only because she loved the movie and "Love is Strange" by Karen O. I didnt expect more out of the CD except to have her listen to the first song over and over, But the whole CD is actually very good. The music is a little dark and morbid but right up our alley, even my 5 year old loves the other songs and sings along (favorite still Karen o's though). Great purchase and don't mind listening to the whole CD over and over...which is exactly what we do
