Product Description

Product Description

"Frankenstein's Manager" argues that management skills training does not work - that is - does not lead to better performing managers. Instead, what we end up with are managers pieced together like Frankenstein's monster - with a bunch of ill-fitting parts rather than a complete and coherent whole person. The author explores the complexities of leadership and shows that only by dealing with people as individuals can meaningful improvement occur. It is possible to modify our behaviour, but only when we have an in-depth understanding of our strengths and weaknesses - something that we can't get from packaged skills training programmes. Aimed at HR managers, consultants and senior executives, this book is for anyone looking for lasting, continuous, transformational development in themselves and the people they lead.

This book is packed with practical, effective and long lasting management and leadership development techniques. The chatty dialogue makes for an interesting and entertaining read, whilst at the same time providing some fundamental lessons about the impact of our behaviour.

McAneny's views on the shortcomings of traditional management training methods make perfect sense as he eloquently argues that only by fully understanding our behaviour and then choosing to do something about it, will we ever begin to truly develop.

I wholeheartedly recommend Frankenstein's Manager as both an entertaining read and an invaluable management tool, and hope that this book is the first of many which share the wisdom of McAneny's unique approach.

I found Frankenstein's Manager to be full of common sense advice, dispelling many of the myths surrounding leadership development in a way which is entertaining and informative. The style is almost like someone speaking directly to the reader, and it holds together very well because of this style. The section on why we cannot actually 'manage' change, and the link he makes with financial forecasting, certainly struck a chord with me, and I felt the 'harder' advice section at the end very helpful, and useful to reflect on. Bill McAneny takes what is generally agreed to be quite a complex subject and makes it simple, interesting and amusing.

The chatty anecdotal style of 'Frankenstein's Manager' makes this an easy, and at times very funny read. However,in part three, there are a whole host of excellent ideas on how leaders can develop without resorting to the usual training courses. His numerous examples and anecdotes provide more than enough evidence to suggest that simply putting managers on training courses will not develop them as leaders.Yet, rather than being simply a negative swipe at training providers,(an easy target), Bill comes up with some really interesting ideas that we could all use. A book that every manager of people would benefit from reading.
