Frank Lloyd Wright on the West Coast ~ it's about time we knew! 10 Dec. 2014
By Vikki Kath - Published on
Format: Hardcover
At long last someone has written about Frank Lloyd Wright's work on the West Coast! (Wikipedia, heads up!) Mark Anthony Wilson, author, architectural historian and college instructor for over 35 years, along with Joel Puliatti and his outstanding color photographs, have just introduced a history-making documentation of Wright's homes and buildings between Seattle and Santa Barbara.
Having lived in California for 50 years or so, I am thoroughly enjoying this coverage of the many homes, buildings and designs that Wright brought into my personal world. Arriving here in the early 60's, I quickly learned of his influence in my “neighborhood” with the San Rafael Civic Center in the process of being built. His influence, at that time, also permeated a good deal of new construction. I lived while new homes were being built in relation to nature with concrete flooring, open living room/dining room designs, and walls of glass ~ all Wright's ideas.
Wilson has interviewed homeowners, or descendants of homeowners, who still live in these western homes, mostly along the Washington, Oregon, and California coast. Apparently, Wright had his hands full with some of these strong-willed, western, women clients wanting to make changes in his designs, and we can see this exciting exchange in detail in some of the lively letters quoted in the book. The stories that Wilson introduces us to are great and fun, great reading ~ like a novel ~ and yet the architectural detail he expresses is rich and professional.
The photographs are lovely, lush ~ almost sensual, whether outside or inside. The many homes strewn all along the coast are photographed in their beautiful environments. In many cases, the furniture and decorations inside are intact and original. There are also some photos of actual blueprints.
I'm going to buy one for my brother back in Virginia for Christmas ~ he is a contractor and an avid Wright fan. He will be very surprised to see the extent of Wright on the West Coast, and I have a feeling he will plan a trip out here this year just to see some of them. Thank you Mark Wilson and Joel Puliatti!

A beautiful book to add to my Frank Lloyd Wright collection. This one has as its focus, the houses Wright built on the West Coat, where the weather allowed more choices, both in building and landscaping. These are the houses that are open and call to the outdoors, welcoming it in, where little break between outdoors and in is needed. The designs are free, a part of the setting, and free of spirit as well.

This is a splendid book. I was surprised as to how easy and engaging it is to read. It is a great book to read while traveling as it is easy to read in a distracting environment. The illustrations are quite nice. The author has a way of writing that keeps one interested chapter after chapter.

I was introduced to Frank Lloyd Wright's organic architecture, while being an Architecture student in college. Since then, I have always been inspired by it. I love to explore His plans and wonderful drawings. This book is beautifully presented and very informative.
