Book Description

Frank Einstein loves figuring out how the world works by creating household contraptions that are part science, part imagination, and definitely unusual. After an uneventful experiment in his garage-lab, a lightning storm and flash of electricity bring Frank’s inventions—the robots Klink and Klank—to life! Not exactly the ideal lab partners, the wisecracking Klink and the overly expressive Klank nonetheless help Frank attempt to perfect his Antimatter Motor . . . until Frank’s archnemesis, T. Edison, steals Klink and Klank for his evil doomsday plan! Using real science, Jon Scieszka has created a unique world of adventure and science fiction—an irresistible chemical reaction for middle-grade readers.

I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. He loved the graphic novel elements of the book, and he loved the basic plot of the book, but the science was just beyond him, and we spent a lot of time discussing what he had read, which is great, except that some of the science was beyond me too, and I ended up spending quite a bit of time harking back twenty years to my GCSE's and/or googling things furiously.

Science mostly leaves me cold but this book is as entertaining as most other books by Jon Scieszka and made me smile. Although it would be good for reluctant readers in content, the level of reading is quite high; the story can still be accessed through the brilliant graphics and it's not as if every word needs to be decoded.

This was a present for my oldest grandson (aged 12 , just into secondary school) and he giggled his way through it !
The science bits are sound , and the amusing presentation was certainly successful with one 12-yr old!
