Produced in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, its origins date back more than 300 years to the presence of early Christian monks living in the hills of the area.
Their skills in fine food and drink would have included the art of distilling, especially the use of the wild hazelnuts and other local ingredients to create a liqueur on which Frangelico is based today.
Its name is also part of the same local legend - an abbreviation of Fra. Angelico, a hermit monk believed to have inhabited the magnificent Piedmont hills during the 17th century.
The Frangelico bottle is an immediate reminder of this distinctive history. Shaped like a monk’s habit, with a traditional rope belt around its waist, it is a guarantee of authenticity and quality that links the past right through to the present day.

Imagine the taste of a Fererro Roche in your mouth as you drink - fabuloso!
Very light brown (caramel) in colour, Frangelico has a consistency that’s akin to a spirit, in fact if you take it in a tumbler you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for light whisky. At 20%, it’s not one of the more powerful alcoholic drinks around and this lower abv helps the taste of the roasted nuts to come through better and makes it, in my opinion, more satisfying and easier to drink. I don’t mind drinks with a punch, but some benefit from less alcohol and this is one of them, with little in the way of alcohol burn. In addition to taking it in a glass, I imagine that Frangelico would make a great addition to a cake or trifle mix.
The first bottle of Frangelico I bought was 1 litre in size, although 700ml seems to be the standard now, and its taste almost gave me the temptation to get through a good chunk of the bottle on the first night. I’m also a fan of Disaronno, and the two have similarities, but Frangelico edges it for me as the taste of hazelnuts is just that bit sweeter and more satisfying for me.
Since discovering Frangelico I no longer have to waste my time blending kids' chocolate bars with vodka to get that alco-chocolate taste.
The ultimate seduction drink: serve over ice whilst saying "doesn't this taste like Kinder Buenos to you" - *pause to chuckle* then pounce. Works every time.
I love Amaretto, but when you want something less sticky and sweet and a little more sophisticated, Frangelico is perfect.
I wish it were easier to buy in supermarkets; then it might be less expensive. But the taste is worth it ....
