Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Having been mixing records for 25 years, Francois K is one of dance music's longest serving decksmiths. His musical taste is notoriously broad (hence the title Choice), ranging from Latin, through disco, funk, hip-hop, house, nu jazz, soul and to whatever other sounds he finds emotive and irresistible. This collection is intended as an introduction to some of the tunes that have influenced Francois over the years, so that there's an inevitable mixed bag to choose from. Bona fide classics sit next to mouth-watering rarities, with a distinct emphasis on deep, funk fuelled disco and a few select house tunes. Slick biscuits like Shalamar's "Right In The Socket" bump next to David Joseph's glitterball classic "You Can't Hide Your Love" and the tribal thump of Jo Smoke's "Koro Koro" while Colonel Abrahams' "I'm Not Gonna Let" hustles with Frankie Knuckles' lascivious classic "Baby Wants To Ride", and Donald Byrd's "Love Has Come Around" does the freak with Lil Louis' "If You Luv Me". An entertaining and colourful romp through some of music's Good Times, Choice is also a fine insight into one of dance music's most dedicated protagonists.--Paul Sullivan

The choice is Yours 27 Aug 2005

People who are familiar with Francois' modern style may not appreciate just where it originates from. He has been a stalwart of the dance music scene for close on 30 years, and this compilation reflects that wealth of experience. There are indeed some classics on here; Donald Byrd, Sharon Redd, Fingers Inc & Shalamar sit happily alongside one another and give the listener an incite in to the evolution of dance music. Don't think about the cost; mark my words, this is a cheap way of getting inside the mind of someone who's been there and knows the score.

After his inspirational Essential Mix CD I couldn't wait for another history lesson from Francois K, a true legend. I wasn't disappointed with the music on offer here, but it's worth noting that unlike Frankie Knuckles's contribution to the same series, this one is unmixed. It might have been interesting to see how he joined the dots between the various styles on show here, but it seems he's left the music to speak for itself. Can't wait for the next volume in the series which has been compiled by Danny Tenaglia!

not my cup of tea 27 Sep 2002
Format:Audio CD
i think FK is a great dj, and i'm a big fan of body+soul and his essential mix cd. but this was just too sickly sweet, lovey dovey disco/soul music for my home listening. the only track i really loved was the brilliant 'I love you more' - Rene and Angela which was sampled my biggie smalls. my advice if you want some classics would be to find FK's mate danny krivit's grassroots cd which is much better imho.
