Book Description

20 Sep 2002 Lion Histories
Francis of Assisi is one of the world's most popular and charismatic religious figures in the history of christendom, and also one of the most misrepresented. Such is the assertion of Mark Galli, who here attempts to strip away the modern gloss in order to discover the real man and the world in which he lived. Chronicling the story of Francis from the affluent lifestyle of his hedonistic youth to his emergence as a Christian leader of great charisma and intensity, and his creation of a new and radical order of poverty and Christian witness, the author roots Francis in his medieval world showing, for example, the violence of the Middle Ages and the corruption of the Church. The saint revealed here is not the romantic free spirit of popular imagination, but a complex and contentious figure who combined a deep mysticism with radical commitment, and above all, sought to glorify God, the creator.

5.0 out of 5 stars the formation of holiness 15 Dec 2004
By matt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book, along with the others in the series, is an excellent introductory text to understand St. Francis and the world in which he lived, struggled and prayed. The text is lavished with photos, artwork and packed with good history and analysis. The pages are sturdy gloss and the covers are meant to be abused. This is an excellent pocket book and would make a great gift for anyone interested but not too knowledgeable on the life and times of Francis. Total background information is provided for the novice. For the price and content you cannot go wrong with this book, or any of the series. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great biography... 28 Jun 2006
By Chad Oberholtzer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Mark Galli has written an accessible but intelligent biography of Francis of Assisi. The life of Francis is told in a very engaging format that reads like a story, rather than an academic exercise. However, he includes a great deal of explanatory sidenotes to provide some of the cultural and historical background to allow that story to make sense. There is a lot of artwork included throughout, which integrates interesting images within the text.

As the sure sign of a good biography, I finished the book feeling as if I really understood who Francis was and what his life meant, not only to his contemporaries, but to the broader story of the Church. I would recommend Galli's work to anyone interested in learning more about this great man of the faith.
